The key duties of the position include The Role This position offers the opportunity for a suitable motivated and experienced technical specialist, signaller, or engineer to join the Spectrum Management Operations (SMO) section in the Defence Spectrum Office (DSO).SMO seeks a highly motivated and organised person with demonstrable knowledge of radio communications and the electromagnetic spectrum, or transferrable technical skills. You will have very good organisational and communications skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, and possess the personal values and behaviours to effectively work in a diverse and busy operational team environment. In this role, you will be expected to obtain significant understanding of Defence spectrum policy and doctrine, and an ability to apply this within domestic and international spectrum regulatory frameworks. Key responsibilities: Conduct role as a frequency assigner; Issue authorisations for use of radiofrequency spectrum, and coordinate with various organisations regarding these; and Assist in developing documents, guidance, and procedures to streamline spectrum assignment processes. This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement (DECA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. About our Team The SMO team is principally responsible and accountable for the management of Defence spectrum licenses and assignments, and as such provisions and ensures access to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) for radio communications services and similar in support of Defence operations, activities, and investments, domestically and abroad. The SMO section also manages frequency assignment tools, resources, software, and provides administrative support to all of these functions directly with the broader Department, including ADF counterparts. Excellent written and verbal skills are a must, in order to engage with internal and external stakeholders as necessary. SMO deals primarily with temporary requests, and some short notice requests mean an ability to prioritise work proactively, efficiently, and diligently in a sometimes high-pressure environment is essential.
