What's the role? Our client, a leading international energy company, is seeking an experienced Senior Power Trader to execute sophisticated trading strategies across Australian electricity markets. This position is responsible for maximising trading profits whilst managing risk exposure through active participation in the National Electricity Market (NEM), managing physical and financial positions, and developing innovative trading approaches in Australia's rapidly evolving energy landscape. The successful candidate will work within a high-performance trading environment, making real-time decisions that impact millions of dollars in energy transactions. You will: Execute power trading strategies across NEM spot markets, futures contracts, and derivative instruments to maximise trading profits whilst managing risk exposure Monitor real-time market conditions including demand forecasting, weather patterns, renewable generation output, and transmission constraints to identify trading opportunities Manage physical electricity positions including generator dispatch optimisation, load hedging strategies, and portfolio balancing across multiple Australian states Develop and implement innovative trading strategies that capitalise on market volatility, renewable energy intermittency, and grid stability requirements Collaborate with quantitative analysts to enhance trading models, validate pricing algorithms, and improve automated trading systems Maintain detailed trading records, conduct profit and loss analysis, and prepare comprehensive reports for senior management and risk committees Build and maintain relationships with external counterparties including generators, retailers, financial institutions, and market operators (AEMO) Ensure strict adherence to trading limits, risk management policies, and regulatory requirements including ASIC and AER compliance Mentor junior traders and analysts, sharing market knowledge and developing team capabilities in sophisticated trading techniques Stay current with regulatory changes, market rule modifications, and emerging technologies that impact Australian electricity trading Our client is keen to hear from candidates with significant power trading experience, with the following technical skills and experience: Minimum 5 years of power trading experience, preferably within Australian electricity markets or similar deregulated markets Deep understanding of electricity market fundamentals including dispatch mechanisms, pricing theory, and transmission constraints Strong knowledge of the National Electricity Market (NEM) structure, AEMO operations, and Australian energy regulations Experience with trading platforms, portfolio management systems, and real-time market data analysis tools Proven track record of profitable trading with demonstrated ability to manage risk effectively Strong quantitative and analytical skills with proficiency in Python, R, MATLAB, or similar analytical programming languages Excellent understanding of financial derivatives, hedging strategies, and risk management principles Experience with weather derivatives, renewable energy forecasting, and battery storage trading highly regarded Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Finance, Economics, Mathematics, or related field required; advanced degree preferred Professional certifications in derivatives trading or risk management advantageous Exceptional communication skills with ability to explain complex trading strategies to non-technical stakeholders Ability to perform under pressure in fast-paced trading environments Strong ethical standards and commitment to regulatory compliance About Our Client Our client is an international energy company that aims to meet the world's growing need for more and cleaner energy solutions in economically, environmentally, and socially responsible ways.
