What's the role? Our client, a leading Australian energy genretailer, is seeking a dynamic Energy Spot Trader to execute real-time trading strategies across Australian electricity spot markets. This position is responsible for maximising short-term trading profits through active participation in the National Electricity Market (NEM), managing intraday positions, and capitalising on price volatility within Australia's evolving energy markets. The successful candidate will operate in a dynamic, fast-moving environment making real-time trading decisions that directly impact profitability. You'll monitor live market conditions, execute trades across multiple timeframes, and work closely with portfolio managers and risk teams to optimise trading performance whilst maintaining strict risk controls. You will: Execute real-time spot trading strategies across NEM dispatch intervals, managing positions from 5-minute dispatch through to daily markets Monitor live market conditions including demand patterns, renewable generation forecasts, transmission constraints, and weather impacts to identify profitable trading opportunities Manage intraday electricity positions through active bidding strategies, portfolio optimisation, and rapid response to market price signals Execute trading strategies utilising automated systems, algorithmic trading tools, and real-time market data feeds Collaborate with generation dispatch teams to optimise physical asset positions and coordinate trading strategies with plant operations Maintain detailed trading logs, conduct real-time profit and loss monitoring, and provide immediate market feedback to trading management Respond rapidly to market events including network outages, plant failures, extreme weather conditions, and regulatory interventions Utilise sophisticated trading platforms and market analysis tools to execute complex trading strategies across multiple market timeframes Work closely with risk management teams to ensure trading activities remain within approved risk limits and exposure parameters Provide market intelligence and trading insights to support broader portfolio optimisation and strategic decision-making Participate in market settlement processes and resolve trading discrepancies with AEMO and counterparties Stay current with NEM rule changes, market developments, and operational procedures that impact spot trading activities Your background and experience This leading energy company is seeking candidates with proven spot trading experience, with the following background: Minimum 3 years of electricity spot trading experience, preferably within Australian NEM or similar real-time electricity markets Deep understanding of electricity market mechanics including dispatch processes, price formation, and settlement procedures Experience with trading platforms, automated trading systems, and real-time market data analysis Strong knowledge of the National Electricity Market (NEM) operations, AEMO dispatch processes, and Australian energy regulations Proven track record of profitable spot trading with demonstrated ability to perform under pressure Excellent numerical and analytical skills with rapid mental calculation abilities Proficiency in trading software, market data platforms, and real-time monitoring systems Understanding of renewable energy forecasting, demand prediction, and weather impact analysis Experience with risk management principles and trading limit compliance Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Finance, Economics, Mathematics, or related field preferred Professional trading certifications or derivatives qualifications advantageous Exceptional decision-making skills with ability to process complex information rapidly Strong communication skills for coordination with trading teams and operations staff Ability to work flexible hours including early mornings, late evenings, and weekend coverage as required About our client Our client is one of Australia's leading energy companies that aims to meet the country's growing need for more and cleaner energy solutions in economically, environmentally, and socially responsible ways.
