The opportunity The Principal Planning Investigation Officer leads complex planning investigations to help protect community amenity and ensure compliance with Victorian planning legislation. It blends technical expertise, problem solving and community engagement, using both informal and formal enforcement pathways. In this role you'll work closely with internal teams and external agencies, while contributing to continuous improvement across the investigations function. What you’ll be doing Investigating complex planning complaints and enforcing compliance through education, negotiation, infringements and legal processes Preparing evidence, statements and submissions, and representing Council at VCAT, Magistrates Court and community forums Providing specialist advice to internal teams and the community on planning enforcement matters Collaborating with other departments and agencies to resolve matters involving multiple pieces of legislation Supporting continuous improvement and guiding others in investigation approaches and problem solving What you'll need to succeed Tertiary qualification in Town Planning or a related discipline, with significant experience in planning investigations and enforcement Strong understanding of Victorian planning legislation (P&E Act 1987, Building Act 1993, local laws and planning scheme requirements) High level written and verbal communication, including conflict management and stakeholder engagement Ability to manage competing demands and deliver high quality investigation and enforcement outcomes Current Victorian driver’s licence Construction Induction (White Card) desirable To be considered for this role applications should include A maximum 2-page cover letter which should outline your interest in the role A current CV which includes key achievements & relevant qualifications Uncover more about this role in the Position Description attached below, or contact Arthur Vatzakis, Manager Planning, Building and Health Services via careers@hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au Applications will be accepted until 11:30pm on 9 April 2026 .
