Property Underwriter – SME & Mid-Market (BizPack) Sydney | Hybrid Working An established Sydney-based underwriting agency is seeking a Property Underwriter to support the continued development of its SME and Mid-Market portfolio. The business operates under a delegated authority model with strong backing from capacity providers and a clear underwriting framework. Decision-making sits locally, allowing the team to move efficiently while maintaining technical standards and governance. The portfolio is focused on SME and emerging Mid-Market Property and Business Pack risks across a broad mix of occupancies. The business has experienced consistent growth and is looking to add capability to support further expansion across its broker network. This is not a start-up environment, but it retains the responsiveness and accessibility of a specialist platform rather than a large, layered insurer structure. The role will involve underwriting new and renewal business within agreed authority levels, assessing risk quality, pricing exposures, applying appropriate terms and endorsements, and negotiating directly with brokers. You will be responsible for managing your portfolio performance, including premium growth, rate adequacy and loss ratio oversight. There is regular interaction with distribution partners, and underwriters are expected to build and maintain strong working relationships across their broker panel. Internally, the team operates collaboratively with open dialogue around appetite, strategy and portfolio performance. Underwriters have visibility across the broader book and contribute to discussions around growth areas, product positioning and broker engagement. The operating model supports autonomy, but accountability sits with the individual - underwriting decisions are respected, and performance is transparent. The successful candidate will bring prior experience underwriting SME or Mid-Market Property / BizPack risks within an insurer or underwriting agency environment. A sound grasp of coverage, wordings, pricing fundamentals and risk assessment is required. Confidence in broker discussions, clear communication and commercial judgement will be important in this environment. This opportunity will suit an underwriter who values technical underwriting, wants genuine responsibility for a portfolio, and is comfortable operating in a business that expects both energy and consistency. The Sydney office operates on a hybrid basis, offering flexibility while maintaining a strong in-office presence to support collaboration and broker engagement.
