This role is within a large social policy agency where we're partnering with the Director on a project to assess the financial and economic impact of cutting regulatory red tape. This regulatory alignment had been approved for development through a previous MYEFO measure. The Opportunity This is a rare opportunity to join a high-calibre team at the start of a major reform program. You will play a key part in shaping the data for a model that underpins national policy advice and budget decisions. With funding approved from the Deputy Secretary until June 2026 and strong prospects for extension, this role offers: A close knit outcomes driven team with a friendly and technical EL2 who believes in gold standard work but is but is pragmatic enough to be able to build models based on assumptions A clear line of sight of the work you’re doing with initial results due for next year’s budget A meaningful contribution to reforms improving outcomes for vulnerable Australians You will be joining a four person tiger team that will hit the ground running to produce an impact assessment report for next year’s budget The economic model has already been developed in-house by the Director, incorporating Cost–Benefit Analysis and CGE modelling. The Role Your work helps answer questions like “If incomes changes, how do travel or service choices shift?" The data you prepare underpins economic scenarios across multiple service lines. As the Data Engineer, you will: Clean and structure large datasets Build pipelines and data-matching models for forward-looking, timeseries analysis Enable the team to run 5-year cost-benefit modelling that informs national reform The Ideal Person This role will suit a data engineer, scientist, or analyst who Is highly skilled in R or Python for cleaning, wrangling, and integrating large datasets Experienced working with policy/ program teams to understand the types of questions they will ask Bonus points if you have an economic background or experience and have worked at agencies including DEWR, JSA, Treasury, Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, DSS, NDIA directly or via consulting Due to the nature of the work Australian Citizenship and existing Baseline clearance is mandatory.
