Forensics is an essential enabler of frontline policing in both the physical and virtual criminal environments. The AFP Forensics area provide a foundation of innovation and collaborative problem solving, examining complex evidence, information and situations. By doing this, AFP Forensics provides solutions that keep pace with the criminal and national security environment. Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Team Member (Bands 4-6) within the AFP Forensic Biology team, responsible for the biological examination and analysis of biological related items of evidence. As a Team Member, you will contribute to the achievement of business, investigation and intelligence outcomes through the application of specialist technical skills and knowledge to forensic biological examinations, DNA analysis and opinion evidence in the criminal justice system. You will be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. Consistent with the AFP values, AFP leadership philosophy, organisational reform agendas, AFP corporate business plans and your Performance Development Agreement, it is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below. What will you do? As a Forensic Biology team member, you play a pivotal role in assisting to create an agile and responsive team. The team member is responsible for the delivery of a range of key services, including: Ensuring outputs are achieved within the strategic direction of the AFP Plan, conduct and coordinate simple/complex forensic biology investigations Maintain currency in biological evidence recovery, DNA interpretation and statistical analysis expertise through ongoing professional development and learning opportunities Undertake laboratory processes including automated DNA extraction, DNA quantitation, DNA amplification and capillary electrophoresis as required Use National and International DNA Databases Provide expert opinion evidence to the courts Provide accurate, timely and impartial technical advice to stakeholders and domestic/international law enforcement agencies Represent AFP Biology in domestic/international forums and advisory groups Guide, mentor and advise junior trainees as required Contribute to validation, research and capability development projects Contribute to the maintenance of the laboratories Quality and Accreditation system
