This is a meaningful identified role for someone who wants to bring culture, care, advocacy and community connection into acute mental health care. In this role, you will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accessing mental health services by providing culturally safe, respectful and community informed support. You will work closely with clinicians, Elders, families, carers and community organisations to help consumers feel understood, supported and connected throughout their care journey. About the role As a key member of the Cultural Assessment and Liaison Team, you will help strengthen cultural safety and improve engagement for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults accessing acute mental health care. Your work will support better outcomes for consumers, families and carers by ensuring culture, connection, family and community are considered throughout assessment, care planning and service delivery. You will also provide cultural advice, education and support across the service, helping teams build stronger culturally responsive practice. What you will be doing In this role, you will: Provide culturally informed guidance in assessment and care planning for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people Support and advocate for consumers, families and carers throughout their care journey Help consumers feel culturally safe, respected, heard and understood Work alongside clinicians to strengthen culturally appropriate responses in mental health care Build and maintain strong relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisations and key stakeholders Contribute to cultural education across the service Provide cultural supervision and guidance to support culturally safer practice Help improve engagement and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults, families and communities About you This role would suit someone who is passionate about supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults and families, particularly in the mental health space. You may bring experience from health, mental health, alcohol and other drugs, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary health care, peer work, community services, cultural support, advocacy or family support. You will bring strong cultural knowledge, a deep respect for community, and the ability to walk alongside people through challenging times with care, patience and strength. This role is ideal for someone who understands the importance of culture, family, Country, kinship and community connection in healing and wellbeing. Essential requirements This is an identified role. Under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 , there is a genuine occupational requirement for the person appointed to this role to be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. Applicants will hold one of the following qualifications. For appointment between HWF3.1 to HWF3.5 : Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work Certificate IV in Mental Health Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs For appointment between HWF3.2 to HWF3.7 , or HWF3.8 limited to employees who meet the requirements of HED 04/23: Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Diploma of Mental Health Diploma of Alcohol and Other Drugs Suitable applicants without the Certificate IV may be appointed temporarily at the HWF3 no qualification level, with support to complete the required qualification under HR Policy G10, Study and Research Assistance Scheme. Once completed, the appointee will progress to a permanent HWF3.1 level.
