Our team The Strategy and Analysis Directorate is part of the Minerals, Energy and Groundwater (MEG) Division. MEG division acquire, analyse and deliver precompetitive data, information, tools and new thinking to support the sustainable development of Australia’s minerals, energy and groundwater resources. We provide authoritative and independent technical advice to the Australian Government to support delivery of national priorities such as initiatives under the Future Made in Australia Act and the Critical Minerals Strategy 2023-2030. The Strategy and Analysis directorate develops strategic mineral industry intelligence to support delivery of Geoscience Australia’s Resourcing Australia's Prosperity initiative and the Australian Critical Minerals Research & Development Hub. Our team leads efforts to build an enhanced resource industry intelligence capability to improve how Geoscience Australia monitors trends and developments in the minerals sector, and to understand Australia’s mineral needs. We provide timely, high-quality strategic analysis, and evidence-based insights and advice to government partners to inform government decisions and policymaking, in a complex and rapidly evolving global environment. Collaboration is core to how we work. We partner closely across Geoscience Australia and support external agencies including the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, Department of Defence and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The role The Strategic Analyst, Mineral Intelligence will work within a specialised team to gather, analyse and disseminate intelligence and insights on Australia’s critical minerals sector and Australia’s mineral criticality. You will support work to design, build and manage a new mineral industry intelligence database that underpins an enhanced strategic capability in mineral industry intelligence for government. You will lead analysis and conduct focussed research to draw out insights on trends and developments in the resources industry and grow Geoscience Australia’s capability in mineral criticality modelling. You will be integral in the development and delivery of high-quality publications and complex, strategic advice to government. You may have line management of a small number of staff. In this role you will: Lead data analysis and targeted research to provide strategic insights on trends and developments in Australia’s mineral resources sector and Australia’s mineral needs and vulnerabilities. Oversee the delivery of detailed, expert technical advice and commodity-focussed publications, to inform government, industry, investors and other stakeholders. Oversee resource industry intelligence data collection, management, QA/QC and delivery. Become a subject matter expert on Geoscience Australia’s industry intelligence database and Mineral Criticality Assessment Platform, and a competent user of Geoscience Australia’s mineral resources database (OZMIN) and external industry intelligence subscription services. Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications A tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant field (e.g. geoscience, data analysis, public policy). Demonstrated skills and experience in a relevant field or industry will be looked upon favourably (e.g. geology, geospatial analysis, mineral resource economics, data analysis and modelling, the minerals and mining industry, evidence-based public policy development). Ability to think critically, identify and compile relevant datasets to develop strategic insights on Australia’s minerals sector and on Australia’s mineral needs and vulnerabilities. Well-developed written skills including the ability to translate complex technical information for a range of different audiences. Well-developed data literacy backed by sound research and data-analysis skills, with the ability to interpret information and identify key issues to inform decision-making. Proficiency and experience with using relational databases and geographic information systems will be highly regarded. Experience with code development for spatial data analysis in Python, R, or other relevant programming language will be highly regarded (but not essential). Are you unsure about applying?
