Lead Gardener Hands-on leadership. If you’re a skilled gardener who loves practical work and also enjoys mentoring others, this could be your next role. We’re looking for a Lead Gardener to help deliver consistent, high-quality gardening and handy person services for older people living at home—while working shoulder-to-shoulder with the team in the field. About Astley Care Astley Care is a not-for-profit, community-based aged care provider supporting people across the South-East Metropolitan area of Perth. Established in 1985, we provide high-quality care and support that promotes choice, dignity, and independence—so people can remain in their own homes, living life their way. About the role Reporting to the Team Leader - In-Home Care, the Lead Gardener is a practical, hands-on role. You will be rostered to complete direct gardening and handy person services yourself— meaning you’ll be on the tools every day —while also supporting, coaching, and keeping the team aligned to safe working methods, maintenance cycles, and Astley Care’s policies, procedures, and quality expectations. This is a permanent, fulltime role, working Monday to Friday. Monday - 6.45 am to 3.15pm Tuesday - 6.45 am to 3.15pm Wednesday - 6.45 am to 3.15pm Thursday - 6.45 am to 3.15pm Friday - 6.45 am to 1.15pm (meaning you can start your weekend early!) Flexible working arrangements may be considered for the right candidate. What you’ll be doing Complete assigned gardening and handy person services as scheduled, using the Alaya Care Client Management System. Undertake gardening tasks including lawn mowing, weeding, pruning, and general garden maintenance to keep client properties safe and well maintained. Complete minor handy person tasks and basic property works where you are skilled and competent. Support induction, training, buddy shifts, and coaching for new and existing gardening team members. Help identify workforce gaps and recruitment needs in partnership with management and Scheduling. Participate in preparing and running monthly gardening meetings and maintenance sessions. Communicate clearly with the gardening team and management about updates, expectations, targets, safe working methods, feedback, and concerns. Address low performance issues as they arise and escalate to your manager as required. Proactively coordinate equipment repairs and maintenance, supporting the team to manage low-level maintenance and repairs. Support incident, hazard, and feedback reporting, and assist with investigations as required. Promote client independence and dignity, maintain confidentiality, and represent Astley Care positively in the community. What we’re looking for Proven experience delivering high-quality garden maintenance and/or handy person services. A practical, hands-on approach—happy to lead by example and work in the field every day. Confidence mentoring and supporting others through coaching, clear communication, and constructive feedback. A strong safety mindset and commitment to safe working methods, hazard reporting, and equipment care. Well-organised with the ability to structure your week to balance scheduled jobs with team support tasks. Comfort using mobile technology and systems (including client management apps) to manage services and documentation. Alignment with Astley Care’s values and a genuine, respectful approach with older people and colleagues. Why join Astley Care? A supportive, collaborative, and values-driven workplace. Meaningful work where you can see the difference you make in the community every day. Opportunities for ongoing learning, development, and growth. A team culture built on trust, respect, and shared purpose. Our commitment to diversity Diversity is woven into the fabric of who we are at Astley Care.
