About the role Avisure is seeking a motivated and field-capable Ecologist / Botanist to support and lead botanical and plant pathogen survey programs across South Australia. This is a hands-on role suited to an early- to mid-career professional who can supervise small field teams, collect and manage ecological data, and contribute to spatial mapping and technical reporting. The primary focus of the role will be weed surveillance and plant pathogen investigations, with occasional involvement in broader ecological and wildlife survey programs. Key Responsibilities Lead and supervise small field teams during ecological surveys. Conduct weed and plant pathogen surveys across diverse landscapes, including structured search programs for early detection of priority weed species. Undertake targeted surveillance for key plant pathogens such as Myrtle Rust and Phytophthora. Identify native and introduced plant species in the field and distinguish weeds from native flora using taxonomic methodologies. Recognise visual indicators of plant pathogens. Collect and manage field data using tablets, GPS-enabled devices, and GIS spatial mapping tools. Prepare clear technical reports, survey summaries, and spatial outputs. Travel across South Australia, including remote locations, and undertake overnight or multi-day field deployments (company vehicle and travel costs provided). Assist with wildlife surveys and broader ecological projects. Required Australian citizenship. Degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Botany, or a related discipline. Minimum 3 years’ field-based ecological survey experience. Demonstrated experience supervising small field teams. Strong plant identification skills, including native and introduced/weed species. Understanding of plant health indicators, pathology, and stress responses. Experience with GPS mapping and spatial data collection. Current valid Australian driver’s licence and willingness to travel for fieldwork. Desirable South Australia Native Vegetation Council (NVC) Accreditation Experience using GIS software (e.g. QGIS or ArcGIS). 4WD driving and recovery experience. Trailer towing experience. Construction White Card. Current First Aid certification.
