About Us The Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital was established in 1968 and is today an integral part of the hospital, providing specialised diagnostic, endoscopic and consultative services for patients with disorders of the digestive tract and the liver. With state-of-the-art diagnostic and interventional endoscopic services, clinicians and support staff provide specialised assessment and gastrointestinal functional testing complementing the treatment of patients with gastrointestinal problems. Specialised departmental staff have been heavily involved with the Queensland Liver Transplant Service since the first liver transplant in Australia in 1985. The department has close clinical links with the upper gastrointestinal, colorectal and hepatopancreato-biliary surgical units.
