The key duties of the position include These positions sit within the AI Branch of the Strategy, Planning, and Performance Division. They form part of the AI Architecture & Horizons and AI Standards & Adoption teams. Together, and will work collaboratively across both. Together, these two teams play a central role in shaping the technical foundations, standards and best practices that support safe and effective AI adoption across government. Key functional areas across the two teams include: Architectures: reference architectures and design principles. Maturity & Optimisation: maturity models, benchmarking, performance engineering, containerisation, model compression, AI operations, and local/edge AI. Prototypes & Global Analysis: horizon scanning, strategic prototyping, global best practices, high-performance computing, sovereign technologies, AI science and engineering, and AI frameworks. Inclusive Experience & Accessibility: user experience guidance, AI accessibility assessments, human oversight principles, explainability standards, and co-design practices. AI Standards: practical guidance, playbooks, best practice and integration patterns for emerging AI capabilities. Adoption and Guidance: whole-of-government guidance and provide support to facilitate the effective adoption of AI in government. Use Case Catalogue: establishing and maintaining a structured catalogue of reusable use case patterns and templates that could be adopted and shared across government. As AI Technical Lead, EL1 you will provide strategic leadership in the development and advancement of the AI Lifecycle model, ensuring alignment across technical, policy, and operational domains. You will lead complex research and analysis, cross-domain technical advice, stakeholder engagement and the development of high-quality outputs, frameworks, and guidance that reflect agreed approaches and support strategic objectives. As AI Technical Officer, APS5 / Senior AI Technical Officer, APS6 you will contribute to defining and advancing the AI Lifecycle model, ensuring alignment across technical, policy, and operational domains. You will undertake research and analysis, assist in preparing technical and cross-domain advice, engage with stakeholders, and support the AI Lead in developing high-quality outputs, frameworks and guidance that align with agreed approaches and support strategic objectives. This position may be offered at either the APS5 or APS6 level, depending on the successful candidate's skills, experience and capability. These positions offer the opportunity to influence how AI is designed, deployed, and governed across the Australian Public Service, ensuring it is safe, ethical, and world leading.
