The branch delivers analysis and policy advice to support market reform, investment and the effective operation of the National Electricity Market (NEM). The Market Insights (MI) team provides data-driven analysis and market intelligence to support the Department's oversight of Australia's electricity markets during the energy transition. The key duties of the position include As an EL1 Data Analyst (Power BI) in the Market Insights team, you will lead the delivery of high-quality data analytics and reporting to support the Department's monitoring of electricity market outcomes and the energy transition. Your key duties and responsibilities will include: Designing, developing, and maintaining advanced Power BI data models, dashboards, and reports that provide timely insights on wholesale and retail electricity market performance, including prices, outages, generation, and emerging risks. Leading complex data transformation and ETL processes using Power Query (M), including merging and appending large datasets, building reusable custom functions, and parameterising queries to support scalable and efficient reporting. Optimising Power BI models and reports for performance and reliability, including managing query folding, reducing model size, improving DAX performance, and diagnosing issues using performance analysis tools. Applying best-practice data visualisation and user-experience design principles to produce intuitive, interactive dashboards that effectively communicate insights to senior executives, ministers, and policy teams. Working closely with policy, regulatory, and technical stakeholders across the Electricity Markets Branch and the broader Department to translate analytical findings into clear, policy-relevant insights. Supporting market monitoring and ad-hoc analysis in response to emerging issues, time-critical requests, and briefing requirements, including contributions to ministerial briefs and executive updates. Providing technical leadership within the team, including mentoring APS-level staff, setting analytical standards, and supporting capability uplift in Power BI, data modelling, and analytics practices.
