McArthur is seeking an experienced Data Analyst, to support our federal Government clients' Data and Knowledge function. Our client provides services that support both veterans and their surrounding families. Commencing in February, this position offers full-time hours and is a casual contract for a period of 12 months. To be eligible for this role, you must have Australian Citizenship, and the ability to obtain, and maintain a baseline security clearance. Successful candidates performing this role, may also be required to obtain an ACIC suitability assessment. Key Responsibilities: Data discovery and profiling: Identify, document and validate internal and external datasets. Assess data quality (completeness, accuracy, timeliness) and propose remediation where needed. Data preparation and integration: Design, document and implement ETL/ELT rules and mappings. Build efficient SQL queries and data pipelines to prepare analysis-ready datasets. Analytics and insight generation: Apply statistical analysis and exploratory techniques to identify trends, anomalies and drivers. Develop reusable code notebooks and repeatable analysis frameworks. Business reporting and visualisation: Build clear, user-focused dashboards and reports (e.g. Power BI/Tableau) with strong data storytelling, meaningful measures and documentation. Stakeholder engagement: Work with business owners, product teams and ICT to understand questions, refine requirements and translate results into decisions and actions. Data governance and security: Support data stewardship, metadata, lineage documentation and access controls. Adhere to privacy, security and ethical standards. Quality assurance: Plan and execute test cases for datasets, transformations, metrics and reports. Implement peer review, version control and change management practices. Selection Criteria: Advanced SQL and data manipulation capability across relational data stores; confidence with joins, window functions and performance optimisation. Strong analytical reasoning with the ability to frame questions, design methods and interpret results, including descriptive statistics and basic inferential tests. Visualisation skills with tools such as Power BI or Tableau; ability to define measures, DAX/calculations and build accessible, well documented dashboards. Clear communication skills (written and verbal) to convey complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders and develop practical recommendations. Stakeholder management experience, including eliciting requirements, prioritising work and managing expectations. Understanding of data governance, privacy and security obligations, including handling sensitive data and applying least privilege access.
