The Role Expatriate Opportunity A growing SME banking business within an established bank in Papua New Guinea is looking for a Head of Business Banking to set the strategic direction and personally drive new business growth. This isn’t a role for someone who wants to oversee from a distance — the SME team is expanding, and you’ll need to be hands-on, leading from the front on both strategy and business development. Reporting to the CEO, you’ll build the framework, grow the portfolio, and shape what SME banking looks like as the business scales. Key Responsibilities Set out and establish the strategic framework for the SME banking business Develop and implement the SME banking strategy in line with the Bank’s broader objectives Actively target and drive new business acquisition across the SME segment Drive cross-selling of lending, trade, payments, and digital solutions across the portfolio Lead product development and innovation tailored to SME clients Oversee portfolio performance, profitability, and effective pipeline management Build and maintain strong relationships with key SME clients, partners, and market stakeholders Ensure sound credit decision-making, working closely with Credit Risk on approvals and portfolio quality Collaborate closely with Credit, Operations, Treasury, Payments, and Trade teams to deliver an integrated SME proposition Drive improvements in customer service, turnaround times, and resolution of escalated customer issues Lead, coach, and grow a high-performing SME banking team as the business scales Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including KYC, AML/CFT, and lending guidelines, and support audit processes Manage SME business budgets, cost-to-income performance, and reporting to executive management About You 10 years’ experience in banking, with strong exposure to SME/business banking and at least 5 years in senior leadership A genuinely active, hands-on leadership style — comfortable building from scratch and generating new business personally A proven track record in business development, portfolio growth, and team leadership Experience scaling a team is highly regarded Strong commercial acumen and credit/financial analysis capability Excellent relationship management and negotiation skills A relevant degree; MBA or postgraduate qualification preferred Why Apply If you want genuine ownership of a growing business line — not just a seat at the table — this is a rare opportunity to build something real, with direct visibility to the CEO and executive team.
