AIR6500 will provide a Joint Air Battle Management System capability for the Royal Australian Air Force. The system will provide multi-domain integration of air, electromagnetic, and missile defence battle management including deployable & fixed operations centres, communications, and both active & passive sensors. Your responsibilities will include: Working on the AIR6500 project the Lead Hardware Engineer will be responsible to shepherd the program product development teams through the entire hardware lifecycle – from early concept validation to final production and certification. Key Responsibilities Program‑wide oversight of all AIR6500 hardware development teams across the project lifecycle. Architectural leadership – drive the AIR6500 hardware solution and interfaces within the overarching program architecture. Requirements & trade management – management of hardware and non‑functional requirements along with shaping the sell‑off strategy. System integration – work closely with System Architects to ensure the correct sizing and specification of hardware elements for AIR6500. Metrics & performance monitoring – capture and assess key hardware metrics (on‑time releases, defect rates, supplier impact). Subcontractor oversight – validate subcontractor analysis reports and ensure alignment with program specifications. Mentorship & knowledge transfer – coach Lockheed Martin engineers, conduct cross‑skilling, and promote knowledge sharing. Active hands‑on execution – roll up your sleeves to execute activities in addition to review and mentoring duties. Ruggedized solution development – design deployable and ruggedized packaging hardware components. Documentation & data packaging – Review and approval of technical documentation and Technical Data Packs. Test & verification – review and approval test plans, procedures, and reports About you: Skills to be successful in this role you will bring: Hardware Engineering Expertise - experience in hardware design, hardware architecture including ICT systems, thermal management, and ruggedization of hardware to meet environmental qualification including where the use of COTS equipment may be required. Lifecycle Leadership - Proven track record leading hardware teams from concept to certification, with strong program‑management skills. System‑Level Integration - Ability to translate system architecture requirements into tangible hardware solutions. Metrics‑Driven - Comfortable using data to drive decisions on schedule, quality, and supplier performance. Stakeholder Management - Skilled at influencing and negotiating with cross‑functional teams, suppliers, and customers. Mentorship - Passion for coaching engineers and building high‑performing teams. Hands‑on Engineering - adept at hands‑on design, prototyping, and testing—authentic “roll‑up‑the‑sleeves” attitude. Documentation - excellent written communication, experienced with technical data preparation for certification. Tools Proficiency – awareness and any experience in DOORS, 3D CAD systems such as CREO.
