What you’ll be doing: As Director, Financial Institutions you will play a central role in driving strategic growth through the junior RMs and directly with the portfolio of institutional investor and financial sponsor clients that you manage. Your day-to-day activities will involve developing robust account plans that align with broader business goals while collaborating closely with senior leaders across APAC. You will work hand in hand with product specialists to craft innovative solutions tailored to client needs and provide essential feedback into product development processes. Building strong relationships internally and externally will be crucial as you influence key stakeholders at all levels. Develop and implement comprehensive account planning processes to manage existing and target financial institution clients, ensuring strategic alignment with business objectives. Collaborate with the local Managing Director and APAC Head of Institutional Investor Coverage to build out the institutional investor strategy for Oceania, contributing valuable insights and market intelligence. Lead direct reports in enhancing current customer sets to achieve revenue and return targets while identifying new opportunities for portfolio growth within the FIG sector. Partner with product specialists to design bespoke financial solutions that address client needs, such as acquisition financing, fund finance, DCM, risk management, and ancillary banking products. Provide critical input into product development initiatives by articulating customer requirements and market trends to ensure offerings remain competitive and relevant. Demonstrate clear leadership in managing the portfolio and overseeing new transactions in close collaboration with the credit division to maintain robust credit quality standards. Cultivate outstanding relationships with key decision-makers at both new and existing client organisations, including C-suite executives, to strengthen MUFG’s market position. Take accountability for credit performance and overall portfolio health related to assigned clients within the FIG sector by monitoring risk metrics and implementing effective controls. Foster effective internal partnerships with risk partners, product leads, relationship managers in other segments (such as Infrastructure), BD teams at MUFG Fund Services & MPMS to develop holistic client strategies. Provide coaching, mentoring, and guidance to direct reports (2 VPs & 1 Analyst) as well as junior staff across GCIB to promote a high-performance culture aligned with MUFG’s core values. What we are looking for To excel in this role, you will bring significant experience managing sophisticated portfolios within corporate or investment banking ideally focused on institutional investors or financial sponsors. Your background should reflect not only technical proficiency but also an ability to foster meaningful connections both inside and outside your organisation. You are adept at navigating complex stakeholder landscapes while maintaining rigorous attention to detail around credit quality standards. You will have a track record in developing your direct and indirect reports. 10 years’ demonstrated experience and track record in building extensive multi-product portfolios of financial institution relationships within corporate or investment banking environments over at least five years in a senior relationship management capacity. Undergraduate degree I Business / Commerce / Economics required; additional qualifications such as CAIA or CFA are highly desirable. Comprehensive understanding of relevant financial markets and capital markets products including acquisition financing, fund finance, debt capital markets, risk management instruments and ancillary banking services. Proven experience leading teams or direct reports within a high-performing banking environment with responsibility for coaching, mentoring, or developing others’ capabilities. Exceptional interpersonal skills enabling you to cultivate trust-based relationships with C-suite executives at both new and existing client organisations as well as internal stakeholders across multiple functions. Strong business acumen combined with advanced negotiation skills allowing you to identify commercial opportunities while balancing risk considerations effectively. Excellent organisational abilities demonstrated through successful account planning processes that drive sustainable business performance across complex portfolios. Deep knowledge of credit management principles coupled with hands on experience overseeing portfolio health metrics. Ability to act as a subject matter expert for the Institutional Investor segment within GCIB Oceania while representing MUFG at industry events or associations when required.
