The opportunity We’re looking for a Senior Legal Counsel to support a large, complex retirement solutions business operating in a rapidly evolving regulatory and digital landscape. This is a high‑impact role where you’ll provide pragmatic legal advice across commercial, regulatory and operational matters, while also helping improve how legal processes, documentation and workflows are delivered. You’ll partner closely with leaders across Operations, Technology, Transformation and Client teams to simplify complexity, enable commercial outcomes, and help design future‑ready contracting and governance frameworks. Location: Melbourne (this role is Melbourne‑based) Key responsibilities In this role, you will: Lead the drafting and negotiation of high‑value, strategic contracts (client‑side and vendor/partner‑side), including longer‑term third‑party service arrangements. Advise on risk allocation, service levels, performance frameworks, accountability and governance. Provide guidance on contract performance, variations, disputes and operational governance. Interpret and apply regulatory requirements impacting superannuation administration and outsourcing arrangements (e.g. APRA/ASIC obligations, CPS 230, operational resilience, breach reporting, privacy and AFSL considerations). Translate legal and regulatory complexity into clear, practical guidance for non‑legal stakeholders. Support incident response, breach assessments, regulatory notifications and resilience activities. Build scalable ways of working by developing templates and playbooks, and identifying opportunities for contract automation and process optimisation (including emerging AI‑enabled tools where appropriate). Mentor and uplift junior lawyers through coaching on contracting and stakeholder engagement. Manage external counsel to ensure efficient, commercially balanced outcomes. About you You’re commercially minded, calm under pressure, and confident advising senior stakeholders. You bring: Australian legal qualifications and a current practising certificate. 7 years’ PQE with strong experience in superannuation highly favourable and/or regulated financial services (in‑house experience strongly preferred; strong secondment experience also valued). Proven capability negotiating complex outsourcing, technology and service delivery arrangements (both customer‑ and vendor‑side). Excellent working knowledge of APRA/ASIC frameworks and regulated outsourcing and operational resilience expectations (including CPS 230). The ability to translate regulatory change into practical impacts for operations, technology, commercial models and governance. A pragmatic, solutions‑focused approach and the ability to influence across a broad stakeholder group. Experience supporting large transformation or migration programs. Exposure to regulatory engagement or supervisory interactions. Experience with legal tech, contract automation or process improvement (or a genuine interest in building capability in this area).
