The Role As a Technical Motor Underwriter you will be reporting to the Technical Underwriting Manager, Motor and will be responsible for: The identification, design, development and implementation of new and innovative Domestic Motor Underwriting Guidelines, both Core and Discretionary; Ongoing review and enhancement of existing Domestic Motor Underwriting Guidelines which optimise business outcomes and customer experience; Design and implementation of continuous improvement initiatives within the Motor Underwriting system and processes to ensure they remain fit for purpose at scale; Providing subject matter expertise to support Production Underwriters and other stakeholders in complex decision making; User Acceptance testing of Underwriting related system changes; Contributing to routine market and competitor analysis. Position Accountabilities Recommending improvements to existing Underwriting Guidelines and development of new Guidelines. Establishing new processes to increase efficiency and effectiveness of Motor Underwriting, and supporting the documentation of new and existing processes and procedures. Respond to and evaluate the impact that changes across the business might have on risk acceptability and the Underwriting framework at large. Ongoing identification and implementation of improvement opportunities / enhancements and automation of Underwriting Guidelines and systems. Provide input into the design and development of approved new Underwriting Guidelines as well as enhancements to the existing Guidelines. Resolve compliance issues of an Underwriting nature including investigation of the issue, working with key stakeholders to identify root cause and undertaking corrective actions. Lead, monitor and report on the progress of Underwriting related projects and the performance of new Guidelines, including taking corrective actions where necessary and completing post-implementation reviews. Perform regular reviews of Underwriting decisions to ensure compliance with Underwriting Authorities, Core Underwriting Guidelines, Discretionary Guidelines and agreed processes. Reporting of Underwriting decision and outcome of reviews to management, including trend analysis and proposed improvement opportunities. Complete monthly reporting to management on performance of Motor portfolio specific to Underwriting referral volumes, inspections, etc. Perform user acceptance testing. Provide advice and support to other business units including but not limited to Contact Centre, Claims and Internal Dispute Resolution. Represent the Underwriting function as a Subject Matter Expert in cross-divisional projects and initiatives. What experience you’ll bring Essential At least 4 years’ General Insurance (preferably Domestic/ Retail lines) experience in Underwriting, Product Development, Portfolio Management, Claims and/or IDR/ Quality Assurance. Sound judgment skills with the ability to interpret evaluate and disseminate information. Excellent problem solving ability combined with attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Sound knowledge/ understanding of short-tail insurance product(s), underwriting and rating methods, systems and procedures – including drivers and levers of profitable growth. In-depth knowledge of relevant regulatory regimes, compliance and insurance legislation. Sound numerical and analytical skills. Ability to work autonomously while maintaining focus. Experience in managing and completing user acceptance testing. IT literacy and the ability to learn new systems. Working knowledge of common application software, e.g. MS Office suite. Ability to respond rapidly and positively to change and to work under pressure to deliver outcomes with competing priorities. Desirable Tertiary qualification preferred. Experience with SQL/ SAS would be a bonus.
