This role ensures environments are reliable, well-governed, and aligned to the needs of delivery teams, supporting efficient development, testing, integration, and release cycles. The role requires a strong technical background, deep understanding of application architecture and interdependencies, and the ability to coordinate complex environment changes. The Technical Environments Manager will serve as the central point of ownership for non-production environment operations, ensuring optimal performance, proactive issue resolution, and clear communication with stakeholders across technology and the business. TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Environment Management & Performance Own the operational performance of all non-production environments across on-premises systems, Azure cloud platforms, and hybrid integrated solutions. Monitor environment health, availability, integration points, and performance metrics, ensuring stability and rapid issue resolution. Manage proactive detection and remediation of errors, failures, and bottlenecks across applications and supporting services. Coordinate upgrades, patches, data refreshes, and configuration changes across environments. Technical Oversight & Interconnectivity Maintain a deep understanding of application architecture, data flows, APIs, and system interdependencies. Work closely with operations, delivery, DevOps, infrastructure, and external vendors to resolve complex technical issues. Change Coordination & Governance Oversee scheduling and tracking of all changes to non-production environments, ensuring no clashes, conflicts, or downtime impacts. Ensure environment usage aligns with release cycles, testing requirements, and project timelines. DevOps, CI/CD & Lifecycle Alignment Work with DevOps and platform teams to optimise deployment pipelines and environment readiness. Ensure environments support the software development lifecycle (SDLC), automation, and continuous integration/deployment practices. Communication & Stakeholder Engagement Act as the single point of contact for non-production environment-related queries, incidents, and planning. Communicate environment status, incidents, changes, constraints, and risks clearly and proactively. Provide regular reporting to leadership, delivery teams, and project stakeholders. Governance & Documentation Maintain environment documentation, runbooks, configuration standards, and architecture references. Define and enforce environment management policies, access controls, and operational procedures. Support audits, compliance requirements, and traceability of changes across environments. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field. Technical certifications relevant to application or platform management (e.g., Microsoft, Azure, ITIL). Proven experience managing environments, application operations, or technical environments in a complex organisation. Strong technical understanding of application architectures, APIs, integrations, databases, and supporting infrastructure. Demonstrated experience with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, automated deployments, and environment configuration management. Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with a technical mindset. Background working with cloud‑based environments (Azure) and hybrid integrations. Experience in governance, documentation, best practice frameworks, and environment lifecycle management. Experience working in Agile delivery environments. Experience with environment virtualisation, containerisation, and infrastructure‑as‑code (IaC). Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools (e.g. App Insights, Dynatrace, Grafana etc). Exposure to release management and QA/testing processes. ABOUT YOU Highly organised with strong planning and coordination skills, able to manage multiple concurrent changes. Highly collaborative approach to problem solving. Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement capabilities. Proven ability to think on feet and make sensible decisions under pressure.
