Privacy Lawyer (EL1/EL2 equivalent) About the role We are seeking a senior lawyer with experience in data governance and privacy law to join our Commonwealth Government client. The successful candidate will focus on providing high quality legal advice on data governance, privacy, secrecy provisions, and the lawful use and disclosure of information under Commonwealth legislation. An initial 6-month labour hire contract is on offer with possibility of a 6-month extension, commencing as soon as possible. This role is full-time (37.5 hours per week) and candidates based in Canberra, Sydney or Melbourne are preferred. However, other locations or remote/flexible working arrangements will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please note: only Australian citizens with the ability to obtain/maintain a Baseline security clearance can be considered for this role; however, an existing clearance will be highly regarded. Duties: Advise on data sharing arrangements and governance frameworks. Interpret and apply Commonwealth privacy, secrecy, and information handling provisions. Support Privacy Threshold and Impact Assessments (PIAs), identify risks and recommend mitigation strategies. Draft and review legal documents, including public interest certificates. Identify legal risks and provide practical solutions to enable compliant information use. Requisite skills/experience: Admission as a legal practitioner in an Australian State or Territory. Demonstrated experience providing legal advice on privacy, data protection, and compliance with relevant legislation. Strong drafting skills for legal documents, privacy policies, and agreements. Proven ability to identify and manage legal risk in complex or high-risk projects. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders.
