The key duties of the position include This position sits within the AI Policy team and is part of the AI Branch. The Principal Data Analyst is responsible for developing and delivering reporting, insights and analysis that supports the implementation of the Government's recently enhanced Policy for the Responsible Use of AI in Government. You will work closely with the Director AI Policy and AI technical specialists from across the wider branch to ensure data insights are integrated with policy and technical expertise. Key Duties: Lead the establishment and delivery of comprehensive data analysis, reporting and insights frameworks to support the implementation of the Policy for the Responsible Use of AI in Government across the APS. Independently establish new data collections, reporting frameworks and analytical products to track AI adoption, use patterns and outcomes across government agencies, exercising professional judgement in methodology selection and implementation. Conduct sophisticated analysis of AI use data to identify trends, risks, opportunities and insights that inform the evolution of whole-of-government governance settings and support mechanisms. Create compelling data visualisations, dashboards and reports that translate complex technical information about AI adoption and impacts into clear narratives for diverse audiences including senior executives, policy makers and technical specialists. Work collaboratively with the AI Policy Operations and AI Review Committee Directors and AI technical specialists across the branch to integrate data insights with policy development and technical considerations, ensuring a comprehensive evidence base for decision making. Work with key government partners including the AIDE function in the Department of Finance and the Australian AI Safety Institute to develop consistent approaches to AI data collection, analysis and reporting. Apply data storytelling expertise to communicate insights effectively to senior executives and ministerial audiences, supporting evidence-based decision making on AI governance and adoption. Provide expert advice on data quality, collection methodologies and analytical approaches to ensure robust, defensible and actionable insights. Support the AI Branch's strategic priorities by identifying data-driven opportunities to accelerate safe and responsible AI adoption that delivers better services for all Australians. Lead discrete analytical projects and work streams with limited supervision, managing scope, timelines and quality while exercising sound judgement on sensitive and potentially high-profile matters. Provide supervision, mentoring and professional development to any direct reports, building their technical capabilities and guiding them in delivering quality analytical work. Build organisational data capability across the AI Branch and broader DTA through knowledge sharing, developing best practice guidance, establishing standards for analytical work and mentoring colleagues in data analysis and visualisation techniques.
