Who we are We deliver biosecurity and imported food regulatory activities to ensure goods, conveyances, travellers and mail meet Australia's import requirements. We are responsible for operational policy and front-line regulatory control settings to manage biosecurity and imported food risk, through the delivery of screening, assessment and inspection activities, and stakeholder engagement and client contact services The Cargo Operations West and Maritime Branch conducts regulatory assessments and inspections of goods across the biosecurity continuum in WA, SA, and NT. Nationally, the branch manages regulatory import clearance functions for international vessels and defence activities, ensuring compliance with biosecurity, imported food, and human health requirements. Additionally, the branch supports the Biosecurity Operations Division through technical training, workplace coaching, and workforce management to strengthen operational effectiveness and manage biosecurity risks. The Maritime Operational Support Team is dedicated to enhancing the operational efficiency and effectiveness of maritime activities. We are committed to driving continuous improvement across maritime operations to deliver excellence and strong biosecurity outcomes for Australia, our stakeholders and colleagues. Our services include the development and delivery of communication tools, comprehensive data and reporting, nationally coordinated training and verification, robust business support functions and leading projects to implement innovative solutions in maritime operations. The team also supports the oversight of work health and safety across maritime operations nationally and provides coordination and secretariat support for the Maritime Operations Work Health and Safety Committee. The Job The APS 5 Program Officer in the Maritime Operational Support Team contributes to the effective delivery of program initiatives and supports governance and operational activities to achieve outcomes aligned with the department’s corporate plan and Biosecurity Operations Division business plan. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines. Additionally, they must demonstrate sound judgement, analyse and interpret information from diverse sources, and take initiative to progress tasks through to completion with minimal supervision. Duties may include but are not limited to: developing written and visual communications including newsletters, talking points and presentations, creating operational support material such as checklists, guidance documents and other tools to enhance operational effectiveness, coordinating the collation of information from internal stakeholders and refining content for executive briefings and other formal documentation, supporting governance activities including committee coordination and secretariat support, monitoring the team inbox and ensuring timely and appropriate responses to incoming correspondence, assisting with responses to data requests and contributing to the development and maintenance of Power BI reports to support effective program monitoring, performance tracking and informed decision-making, supporting continuous improvement initiatives by identifying and implementing opportunities to streamline and improve business processes, assisting with the coordination and implementation of maritime assurance activities by contributing to planning, tracking progress, preparing reports and maintaining relevant documentation, supporting Maritime Training Coordinator functions as required, building and maintaining positive working relationships with team members and internal stakeholders, upholding and modelling the APS Code of Conduct and Values and promoting a positive workplace culture, promoting and complying with departmental Work Health and Safety (WHS) and Rehabilitation policies and guidelines. What are we looking for knowledge and experience Experience in preparing communication materials and other tools to support operational effectiveness. Experience using SharePoint to develop forms, manage lists and prepare newsletters. Sound knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications (including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Teams) as well as familiarity with the Maritime and Aircraft Reporting System and the ability to quickly learn new IT systems. An understanding of the maritime biosecurity operational environment is highly desirable.
