You'll receive competitive salary and benefits. Position overview This role sits within the Extreme Weather unit, part of the Application Services Program in the Data and Digital Group. The unit is responsible for delivering critical 24/7 support and preventative maintenance for a suite of forecasting software systems essential for extreme weather predictions, including thunderstorms, tropical cyclones, and radar data processing. As an Applications Engineer, you will play a key role in a team that develops, supports, upgrades, and manages these extreme weather applications. Your primary focus will involve working on radar data processing systems and meteorological observation extraction and reporting tools. This position requires proficiency in Linux, C/C++, Perl, PHP, Python, and Bash. You will collaborate with various teams to manage data delivery, server configuration, support, and training. Additionally, you will work closely with the Bureau's IT teams to ensure the seamless operation of critical applications, rapidly address operational challenges, optimise existing systems, and facilitate the deployment of new systems. Regular interaction with IT specialists, forecasters, policy managers, and other stakeholders for planning and reporting will be an integral part of your role. The software systems you will manage are classified as critical Category 1 applications, which must maintain 24/7 availability and meet the highest standards of reliability, accuracy, and professionalism. This may include participating in an after-hours roster as required. Excellent technical analysis, problem solving, communication and teamwork skills are required, as well as flexibility and a willingness to learn new technologies. The occupant will be involved with interactions with application and system vendors as well as other technical teams and forecasting experts across the Bureau. The key duties of the position include: The responsibilities of the role (under limited direction) include but are not limited to: Development and maintenance of applications within established standards and agreed SLAs / timelines Investigation and resolution of incidents and problems within agreed SLAs Testing, packaging and deployment of configuration and software changes Developing and maintaining system documentation, including user documentation and standard operating procedures for support Ensuring adherence to Technology Policies and Procedures, including Incident, Problem and Change Management Continuous Improvement of systems, standards and processes for best practice Planning and prioritising tasks effectively to meet support SLAs and agreed timelines Liaising effectively with colleagues, management, internal customers and stakeholders to achieve role outcomes Other duties as required Participation in an out of hours on call support roster Complying with all Bureau work, health and safety policies and procedures, and taking reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of employees, contractors and visitors who may be affected by your conduct.
