About the team The Cloud Platforms Section in the ICT Operations Branch delivers and manages secure, scalable, and cost-effective cloud infrastructure across the department. The team provides enterprise-grade support for cloud platforms, drives legacy system modernisation, and enables DevOps adoption and application delivery through Infrastructure as Code, automation, and continuous integration/deployment pipelines. Responsibilities also include setting and enforcing best practice cloud architectural standards and ensuring comprehensive cost show-back for cloud consumption. The team supports the division’s move to best-practice cloud services and financial management, offering data-driven insights, cloud billing oversight, and optimisation initiatives in a collaborative and professional environment. Our ideal candidate Our ideal candidate will have: A degree in Information Technology or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience. Industry-recognised certifications and/or in cloud technologies or SQL/database management Experience designing, coding, testing, documenting, and amending complex programs and scripts. Experience with automation tools (e.g., PowerShell, Terraform, Ansible) and DevOps. Experience with cloud database platforms and technologies Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on scalable and secure solutions. Effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to prepare clear reports and technical documentation. Exposure to automation, system integration, and cloud migration projects. Understanding of disaster recovery, availability management, and database performance tuning. What you will do This is an exciting opportunity for an IT professional to join our team as an APS6 Cloud Engineer with a focus on SQL databases. The role sits within the Cloud Platforms Section and supports the delivery of various ICT projects across the division. The successful candidate will collaborate with agile, multi-disciplinary teams to implement and manage SQL Server infrastructure across both on-premises and cloud platforms. The key duties of the position include: Designing, implementing, and managing cloud infrastructure solutions ensuring alignment with organisational objectives and evolving needs. Applying agreed standards and tools to deliver well-engineered, scalable, and reliable solutions, including writing and refining automation scripts. Performing system design, prototyping, and integration, participating in reviews of requirements and specifications. Developing, configuring, and maintaining SQL databases in cloud and on-premises environments, including installation, upgrades, and documentation. Providing application support, actively monitoring and responding to incidents, and troubleshooting issues across cloud and database platforms to ensure optimal performance and minimal downtime. Monitoring system and service availability and supporting disaster recovery planning and testing. Participating in agile, multi-disciplinary teams, displaying flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic environment. Documenting technical solutions and presenting information clearly to diverse audiences and stakeholders. Providing advice and guidance on the adoption of cloud and database technologies, ensuring compliance with APS standards, values, and frameworks. Eligibility To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens. Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
