Job Description Scotland - (Hybrid, Office, Site) Permanent Competitive Salary Car/Car Allowance Flexible Benefits Summary: Freedom Professional Services is seeking a Senior Design Engineer (Protection & Control) to join our growing team and work on complex engineering projects aligned with the country’s Net Zero targets. Our projects cover the entire energy system, including transmission, distribution, storage, and load-end consumers in manufacturing, processing, data, and recycling sectors. The successful candidate will demonstrate a history of teamwork, career achievements, high-quality project experience, and professional networking skills to gain insights, new work leads, third-party support, and second opinions. Key responsibilities include: Utilize expertise in Transmission and Distribution protection and control specification and scheme design, including protection setting calculations. Assess engineering problems critically and evaluate technical solutions to ensure engineering excellence. Communicate effectively to prioritize tasks and ensure understanding of relevant legislation such as CDM and ESQCR, especially in managing transmission and distribution networks. Design substation Protection, Control, SCADA, and automation systems from 11kV to 400kV using AutoCAD, including creating diagrams, schematics, and performing cable sizing calculations. Produce specifications and P&C logic drawings for substations. Generate PSL logic files and relay setting files. Work on both Greenfield and Brownfield substations, adapting to site conditions. Collaborate with design, construction, and engineering teams, and liaise with other departments and external stakeholders. Ensure timely, within-budget delivery that meets client expectations. Support operational staff and address technical queries, including site visits during commissioning. Review, mentor, and provide feedback on junior engineers’ work. Manage a team of senior and design engineers as a Team Lead. Qualifications and experience required: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (2:1 or above); a master’s degree for senior roles. Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or close to achieving chartership. 8-10 years of experience in electrical protection and control system design, including substation automation and SCADA. Optional certifications like NEBOSH or specialized training in protection and control systems.
