Who we are The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) is the research arm of the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. Agricultural Forecasting and Trade Branch provides research, analysis and advice on agricultural commodity prices and production; forecasts for key commodities; agricultural and trade policy; trends and drivers of trade and global markets; and emerging policy issues. The key duties of the position include The Job ABARES has a position(s) available at APS 6 level in the role of Economist. As an APS 6 Economist within ABARES you will be responsible for contributing to a team delivering research and analysis to support our department's priorities. Duties include, but are not limited to: monitoring trends and drivers in Australian and international markets for agriculture, fisheries and forestry producing forecasts, research and analysis on agriculture, fisheries and forestry markets communicating forecasts, research and analysis to internal and external stakeholders, using a variety of methods - including in data products, written reports and verbally documenting forecasting, research and analysis methods, and seeking opportunities to enhance and improve methods over time developing and maintaining industry networks used to support forecasting, research and analysis processes and to improve methods over time developing and consulting on ideas for new projects and research activities based on departmental priorities, stakeholder needs and emerging issues contributing to quality assurance and data governance processes to ensure published work meets ABARES standards. Please note that this recruitment process will initially be used to fill one vacancy on an ongoing basis and the role is open to all locations listed including regional areas. The merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may also be used to fill future ongoing vacancies in the branch where the duties are of a similar nature.
