About the role. The McCain Smithton Health & Safety Lead supports the implementation and continuous improvement of the site’s safety management system to ensure a safe working environment for all employees, contractors, and visitors. Working closely with operational teams, this role provides practical support in risk management, incident reporting, compliance activities, and safety training. The lead plays a key role in promoting a proactive safety culture by engaging frontline teams, supporting safety initiatives, and ensuring adherence to relevant health and safety legislation and company policies. What you’ll be doing. Coach Key Risk Area (KRA) groups and provide technical safety guidance Act as first point of escalation for safety-related project issues Coordinate the Central Safety Committee and KRA group presentations Facilitate and coach teams in process-based risk assessments Lead investigations into high-potential incidents and oversee H&S action management Support continuous improvement through McCain’s MDI program Provide health and safety coaching to operational teams Support and liaise with employees during the return-to-work process What you’ll need to be successful. Certificate in Work Health & Safety (WHS) or equivalent 3 years’ experience in safety or manufacturing leadership roles Strong experience in risk assessments and implementing controls Knowledge of incident investigation and emergency response principles Skilled in site inspections, monitoring, and audits Confident interpreting H&S data and audit findings Experience developing or updating H&S documentation Ability to coach and influence frontline teams on safety systems Experience or willingness to support return-to-work and injury management programs Leadership principles.
