The Assistant Director, Common Assessments plays a key role in supporting the implementation and ongoing refinement of system-wide literacy and numeracy assessments in ACT public schools, as part of the ACT Government’s Strong Foundations reform. Working within a small, high-performing team, the position contributes to the delivery of ACT public schools’ local, national and international assessments, surveys and data collections by ensuring high-quality data systems, clear operational processes, and effective stakeholder support. The role requires strong capability in managing large, complex data sets and a demonstrated ability to translate this data into meaningful insights and metrics that inform executive decision-making, school improvement, and system performance monitoring. The successful applicant will demonstrate excellent analytical and technical problem-solving skills, a continuous improvement mindset and an ability to identify and implement process efficiencies across data and assessment systems. Service orientation is critical, with responsibility for supporting schools and internal users to access and interpret common assessment tools and data. Project management is also a key aspect of the role, particularly in the coordination of assessment activities and the development of system procedures and communication materials. The position requires well-established organisational and communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment. WHAT YOU WILL DO Project manage the implementation of system-wide common assessments across ACT public schools, ensuring clear planning, monitoring, and reporting of progress. Liaise with key stakeholders, including schools, contractors, and governance bodies, to develop and deliver implementation plans for common assessments. Prepare high-quality written materials, including policy and procedure documents, executive briefings, and communication products for diverse audiences. Contribute to the Directorate’s educational strategies and priorities by providing data-informed insights and recommendations to support system-wide policy and program delivery. Eligibility/Other Requirements: Professional and Technical Skills, and Knowledge Extensive experience in stakeholder engagement, with the ability to manage relationships across multiple internal and external groups. Strong liaison and communication skills, both oral and written, with a proven ability to convey complex information clearly. Established data analysis and reporting skills (including ability to use tools such as: Excel, Power BI, Survey Manager, or SQL Server). Demonstrated experience in project management, including developing plans, setting priorities, and monitoring progress to meet milestones and deadlines. Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities, with experience in interpreting data to inform decisions. Behavioural Capabilities Proven ability to work independently, plan and manage a small team’s workload, and ensure outcomes meet expectations. Ability to lead and mentor team members to deliver program and administrative priorities. Rigorous organisational skills and attention to detail to support program delivery.
