About the role Mater Health has an exceptional opportunity for a General Physician to join the team in the Division of Medicine on a part time (hours negotiable), maximum term contract for 8 months. As a General Physician, your primary overarching purpose is to review selected patients pre-operatively to optimise medical care in relation to planned surgery, monitor progress and assist with management post-operatively, including post discharge management of medical issues by the general practitioner. You will also provide care to inpatients and outpatients within the general medicine and Medical Assessment and Planning Units. What you’ll be doing This role involves the provision of high quality, evidence-based care as part of an established perioperative medicine consult team, with the aim of improving patient outcomes. Duties will include. Conduct preoperative assessment and optimisation of medical care for higher risk surgical patients through the perioperative medicine clinic. Provide acute medical assessment and management in the perioperative setting in conjunction with surgical, anaesthetic and medical sub-specialty colleagues as part of a medical consult service Assist with longitudinal care and discharge planning in conjunction with surgical teams as part of a medical consult service Communicate effectively with surgical, anaesthetic and medical colleagues, including through case conferences and multidisciplinary team meetings where appropriate. Conduct weekend ward rounds in the Acute Medical Unit as part of a 1 in 5 weekend roster. Engage with quality improvement initiatives across the department of general medicine Provide supervision and support to General Medicine Advanced Trainee rotating in perioperative medicine. Engage in the supervision and education of medical students and basic physician trainees There will also be opportunity to provide medical cover to General Medicine or Acute Medical Unit inpatient teams, as well as Orthogeriatric assessments and contributions to ongoing orthogeriatric research projects (commensurate with experience/fellowship) About you To be successful in this role, you will have: Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians AHPRA registration as Specialist – General Physician Prior Consultant experience in General and Perioperative Medicine in a teaching hospital is desirable Current high-level knowledge of General and Perioperative Medicine across a range of surgical specialities and a wide range of medical conditions Ability to provide high quality, compassionate care in line with Mater values Ability to manage complex medical problems integrating knowledge and clinical skills Ability to communicate effectively at all levels Demonstrated ability to lead others and develop services Demonstrated teaching ability, including supervision of RACP physician trainees A commitment to medical research and quality improvement Why join us?
