Head of Environment and Sustainability Lead environmental outcomes for a growing City. Some roles are about maintaining what is already in place. This one is about taking charge, setting direction and getting things moving. The City of Armadale is looking for an experienced environmental or sustainability leader to lead our Environment and Sustainability function. This is a broad leadership role with responsibility for environmental planning and compliance, circular economy, carbon management, sustainability initiatives, waste and resource recovery planning, community engagement and partnerships. The role brings together a broad mix of environmental leadership, sustainability, compliance, community outcomes and operational service planning. Waste and resource recovery are part of the portfolio, but the broader focus is on leading a capable Environment and Sustainability function that can support the City’s growth, meet its obligations and deliver practical outcomes for the community. The right person may come from environmental management, sustainability, local or state government, consulting, utilities, infrastructure or another complex regulated environment. What matters most is their ability to lead people, solve problems, work across complexity and turn direction into action. You do not need to have worked across every part of the portfolio before. You do need to bring the leadership, judgement and practical environmental capability to understand the work, support the team and get things moving. This role will help the City make good long-term decisions about environmental protection, compliance, sustainability, resource recovery and community outcomes. You will report to the Executive Director Technical Services and lead a multi-disciplinary team working across strategy, operations, compliance, engagement and delivery. You will have the opportunity to: set the direction for the City’s environment and sustainability priorities lead environmental planning, compliance, sustainability, circular economy, carbon management and waste/resource recovery planning bring structure, clarity and momentum to a broad portfolio develop a capable team and strengthen the way the function works provide clear advice to Executive, Council and internal stakeholders build strong relationships with government agencies, industry, community groups and regional partners identify practical opportunities, funding options and partnerships that deliver better outcomes for the City and community. This is not a role for someone who only wants to write strategy. It is also not a role for someone who wants to wait for perfect conditions before acting. We are looking for a leader who can understand the landscape, make decisions, solve problems, work with people and deliver. About you You may come from environmental management, sustainability, consulting, infrastructure, utilities, resources, state government, local government, waste/resource recovery, or another complex regulated environment. You do not need to have held this exact title before. You do need to bring the capability, judgement and confidence to lead a broad environmental and sustainability function. You will bring: experience leading environmental, sustainability or related service areas a practical, problem-solving leadership style the ability to take ownership, make decisions and follow through strong understanding of environmental compliance, governance, risk and stakeholder expectations the ability to work across technical, operational, community and political environments confidence to lead a team through change, growth and competing priorities sound financial, procurement, contract and project management capability the ability to communicate clearly and influence at senior levels.
