COOK Job duties: Prepare, cook, and present food in accordance with recipes and menu requirements Set up and maintain kitchen workstations and operate kitchen equipment safely Measure, weigh, and prepare ingredients Cook food using a variety of methods including baking, grilling, steaming, and boiling Prepare multiple meals and food items efficiently during busy service periods Pack and prepare food orders for counter sales and online orders Serve customers during recess and lunch service Maintain high standards of food hygiene, cleanliness, and workplace safety Clean kitchen equipment, benches, and food preparation areas Monitor stock levels and assist with stock ordering and inventory control Follow all school canteen policies and food safety procedures Work collaboratively with the canteen team to ensure efficient daily operations Keep up to date with cooking methods and food preparation techniques Skills and Experience Previous experience working as a cook or in a commercial kitchen preferred Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment Strong teamwork and communication skills Knowledge of food safety and hygiene practices Good time management and organisational skills Ability to multitask and follow instructions carefully Requirements Food Handling Certificate (preferred) Ability to work during school canteen operating hours Current Working With Children Check (or willingness to obtain) may be required Qualifications: Certificates of cookery Food safety Supervision skills set for community service and health industry All about allergens for general food service KITCHENHAND When working in a school canteen, staff have legal and professional responsibilities to protect students’ health, safety, and wellbeing. Key responsibilities include: Supervise students appropriately and maintain a safe environment at all times. Follow all food safety and hygiene regulations, including safe food handling, temperature control, cleaning, and preventing contamination. Comply with allergy management procedures and ensure students with food allergies or medical conditions are protected. Follow the school’s healthy food and nutrition guidelines when preparing and selling food. Maintain respectful and professional behaviour with students, staff, and parents. Report any accidents, injuries, hazards, bullying, or child safety concerns immediately to management or the school. Protect student privacy and confidentiality. Ensure all equipment is used safely and safely stored when not in use. Follow workplace health and safety (WHS) procedures, including safe lifting, chemical handling, and emergency procedures. Ensure food provided is fresh, correctly labelled, and safe for consumption. Comply with child protection laws and school policies, including appropriate conduct around children. Hold required clearances or checks where required, such as a Working With Children Check/DCSI clearance. Follow instructions from school management and canteen supervisors. Maintain accurate records such as temperature logs, cleaning schedules, and incident reports.
