About the Role and Responsibilities We are seeking a skilled and reliable Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic to join the team at Service Chef Pty Ltd. In this role, you will be responsible for installing, maintaining, servicing, and repairing commercial refrigeration and air conditioning systems used within food production, storage, and operational facilities. The position involves diagnosing faults, carrying out preventative maintenance, monitoring system performance, and ensuring refrigeration and cooling equipment operates efficiently to support food safety and production requirements. You will work closely with operational and maintenance teams to minimise downtime, maintain compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and support the ongoing reliability of critical equipment and facilities. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve mechanical and refrigeration system issues in a fast-paced commercial environment. Tasks Include: Install, assemble, service, maintain, and repair industrial and commercial air-conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment, including systems containing refrigerant gases and liquids. Assemble components and parts to construct and commission air-conditioning and refrigeration systems used in commercial kitchen and foodservice environments. Interpret technical drawings, specifications, and service manuals to determine installation requirements and system layouts for refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment. Diagnose faults and carry out repairs on air-conditioning and refrigeration components such as compressors, motors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, switches, and gauges. Repair and maintain refrigerant, liquid, and gas lines associated with cooling, heating, and refrigeration processes, including copper pipework for commercial systems. Perform pipe cutting, bending, threading, brazing, and welding activities required for the installation and repair of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. Perform fault-finding and breakdown repairs on refrigeration, gas, and electrical systems within commercial kitchen equipment. Test, operate, and adjust air-conditioning and refrigeration systems and control mechanisms to ensure correct functionality, performance efficiency, and operational reliability. Fill systems with gas or fluid to conduct leak testing, recover and remove gases and fluids using vacuum pumps, and recharge systems with refrigerant in accordance with specifications. Service, inspect, and maintain commercial refrigeration and kitchen equipment including cool rooms, freezer rooms, commercial refrigerators, combi ovens, dishwashers, glasswashers, cooktops, ranges, grills, and deep fryers. Carry out scheduled preventative maintenance and system overhauls to identify faults, repair or replace defective components, and restore equipment to operational condition. Record causes of malfunctions, test results, and corrective actions taken, and complete job reports and service documentation. Ensure all work is performed in compliance with Australian Standards, WHS requirements, licensing obligations, and relevant industry regulations. Provide on-site technical support and professional service to clients at hospitality and commercial premises. Qualifications, experience and other requirements Relevant qualification at AQF Certificate III level in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, including at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In lieu of formal qualifications, a minimum of three (3) years of relevant full-time experience may be considered. A minimum of three (3) years of relevant full-time experience as an Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic, including at least one (1) year of recent experience gained within the last three years. Demonstrated experience in the installation, servicing, maintenance, and repair of commercial air-conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment. Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills across refrigeration, electrical, and mechanical systems. Sound knowledge of refrigerant handling procedures, preventative maintenance practices, and system testing requirements. Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and service manuals. Commitment to workplace health and safety standards, industry compliance requirements, and safe work practices. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and effectively as part of a team. Good communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills. .Ability to work flexible hours and attend breakdown or emergency service work where required.
