The Opportunity Our Translational Genetics Team focuses on providing molecular analysis of genetic variants, to deliver early, accurate diagnosis and inform best treatment for children living with genetic and rare diseases. Our work involves creating a pipeline to fast track rare and genetic disease gene mutation analysis. We utilise a combination of gene editing, inducible pluripotent stem cell disease modelling (neuronal, cardiac, lung, and other), in combination with functional genomics to provide the molecular data that makes patient diagnosis possible. We now have an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant to join our team to perform experimental laboratory work in the field of rare disease research. The position will involve the introduction of genetic variants in induced pluripotent stem cells using CRISPR gene editing, cell cloning, and disease modelling to neural, cardiac, kidney, liver, or other cells as relevant to the rare disease. Key responsibilities: Conduct research experiments for genetic variant interpretation, using techniques such as CRISPR gene editing, PCR, amplicon sequencing, genomic DNA preparation, RNA preparation, PCR, amplicon sequencing, etc. Tissue culture for pluripotent stem cells, derived cells, and primary cells. Flow cytometry, including antibody staining and preparation of cells for sorting. Design of experiments for investigating functional changes in genetic variant cells. Conduct survey of the literature as requested. Located in our offices within Perth Children’s Hospital, this full-time role will be offered for an initial 2-year period.
