About the role We are seeking dedicated and skilled casual Technicians to join our busy Hospital Laboratory team based at our Calvary Adelaide Hospital Laboratory. In this role, you will apply your technical expertise to ensure timely, accurate and complete processing of pathology specimens by coordinating specimen flow through the laboratory with emphasis on prioritising urgent and time critical specimens. You will enjoy a hands on, task focused role with variety including processing of patient samples, managing workflow and other laboratory duties in a multi- disciplined team environment. In addition, you will be able to work individually and within a team environment delivering a high level of customer service to assist stakeholders with phone enquiries, collection of specimens from hospital wards and booking hospital inpatients requests. The department operates over morning, afternoon, and evening shifts 24 hours, 7 days a week. This schedule plays a vital role in maintaining the smooth flow of specimen processing and supporting patient care beyond standard business hours. Your key responsibilities will include: Perform routine laboratory procedures in line with established protocols, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail Receive, sort, barcode, and accurately register specimens in accordance with laboratory procedures including verifying patient details and escalating discrepancies to senior staff Prioritise urgent specimens (e.g. ICU, emergency, oncology, blood gases) to ensure timely processing Communicate the arrival of urgent samples to laboratory staff promptly Perform data entry and assist with laboratory information system tasks Conduct laboratory procedures according to documented protocols Under Supervision, operate and maintain analysers, including QC loading and routine maintenance Process specialised tests such as arterial blood gases and related analyses Handle telephone enquiries regarding results, inpatient hospital bookings and enquiries from stakeholders professionally and document as per procedures Manage specimen transport, including ward collections, dispatch and receipting Monitor stock levels and assist with inventory control and consumables management Complete administrative and quality tasks, including audits and overdue list reviews Ensure accurate documentation, data entry, and strict confidentiality of patient and organisational information Contribute to quality improvement, teamwork, and compliance activities, including feedback, training, and adherence to policies and procedures To be successful you will have: Essential Minimum of two years as a technical assistant Technical assistant experience must be in laboratory or medical environments Exceptional communication skills (both verbal and written) to effectively communicate with the stakeholders including employees, doctors and medical staff with a positive and professional attitude Exceptional time management skills and able to work autonomously and independently Ability to cope and thrive in a busy environment with exceptional attention to detail, organisation, reliability and accuracy Be proficient in Microsoft Office programs and be confident in using computer programs Knowledge of routine laboratory procedures, medical terminology and equipment operation Understanding of WHS processes relevant to working in a laboratory environment Understanding of NPAAC and NATA guidelines governing the industry Availability to work rostered shifts across morning, afternoon, evening and overnight.
