Division/Section: Planning Environment & Lifestyle / Environmental Health & Regulation Position Type: Permanent Full Time (9 day fortnight, 36.25 hours/week) Salary Range: LGO2- LGO3 ( $67,410 - $81,390 per annum superannuation) based on skills, qualifications and experience Location: Townsville Application Close: 11:45pm, Monday 8 June 2026 About The Role Provide daily care for animals including feeding, cleaning, enrichment, and general husbandry, while assessing behaviour and making clear rehoming recommendations. Monitor health, identify illness or injury, support veterinary care, administer treatments, and safely handle animals of all temperaments, including fearful or aggressive, using humane practices. Assist with euthanasia where required. Deliver strong customer service by supporting adopters and owners, maintain accurate records and data from intake to exit, and provide front-of-office support including enquiries and payments. At Level 3, act as a designated ‘Relevant Person’ under Council approvals in line with the Medicines and Poisons Act 2019. About You Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety, compliance, and legislative obligations Strong communication skills to engage effectively in a sensitive, community-facing environment Excellent time management and ability to prioritise competing demands Sound knowledge of animal welfare standards and shelter support programs Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications Working knowledge of relevant local/state animal legislation and ability to apply it diplomatically Investigation and evidence-gathering skills for compliance-related matters Ability to assess and document dog and cat behaviour for rehoming suitability Minimum Certificate II in Animal Studies (or equivalent) Current C-class driver licence and Working with Children Check (Blue Card) Ability to obtain Authorised Persons Card and First Aid certification Availability for weekend and public holiday shifts Level 3 Additional Requirements Relevant Certificate IV qualification (Animal Behaviour/Training or Vet Nursing or equivalent) Minimum 5 years’ industry experience with domestic animals Approved ‘Relevant Person’ under Council’s General Approval (Medicines and Poisons Act 2019) Townsville City Council is the largest local government authority in Northern Australia.
