The Opportunity: NEPEAN Power is seeking an experienced Senior Automation Engineer to join our growing Automation team based in Thornton, NSW. This is an exciting opportunity for a technically strong and hands-on engineer who enjoys solving complex automation challenges while also providing leadership and mentoring to engineers and technicians. You will play a key role in the design, development, commissioning, and continuous improvement of industrial control systems, ensuring NEPEAN Power’s equipment meets the highest standards of safety, quality, and performance across both workshop and onsite environments. Key Responsibilities: Technical Leadership Lead PLC, SCADA, HMI, and VSD software development, configuration, and commissioning activities. Provide technical guidance and support during testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning. Assist with integrating new automation technologies and products into NEPEAN Power standard designs. Engineering & Project Management Oversee engineering deliverables, project progress, labour allocation, and project costs. Coordinate team resources in collaboration with the Automation Manager. Mentor and support engineers and technicians to build team capability and technical excellence. Maintain engineering management systems including Jira, Tempo, and associated workflows. Standardisation & Continuous Improvement Drive standardisation across engineering documentation, control systems, and digital processes. Develop and improve engineering procedures, templates, and workflows. Identify opportunities for process improvement and operational efficiency. Customer & Stakeholder Engagement Liaise with customers and internal stakeholders to resolve technical issues and deliver project outcomes. Identify customer needs, system enhancements, and optimisation opportunities. Safety & Compliance Apply SWMS, WHS procedures, and risk assessments in all engineering activities. Ensure all equipment complies with NEPEAN Power quality and compliance standards. Report and address workplace hazards in a timely manner. About You: To be successful in this role, you will bring strong automation engineering capability combined with leadership and problem-solving skills. Qualifications & Experience Electrical trade qualification and/or engineering qualification. Minimum 5 years’ experience in industrial automation. Proven experience in PLC/SCADA development, testing, and commissioning. Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting capability across complex control systems. Technical & Professional Skills Strong knowledge of PLCs, VSDs, HMI/SCADA systems, and industrial communications. Excellent organisational, analytical, and time management skills. Strong communication and stakeholder engagement abilities. Ability to mentor and guide team members while supporting project delivery. Flexible and adaptable approach with the ability to manage competing priorities. High-level computer literacy and experience using digital engineering tools.
