Band 2. The Opportunity Moonee Valley City Council is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Apprentice Gardener to join our Parks and Gardens team. This is an excellent opportunity to develop practical skills while completing a Certificate III in Horticulture. In this hands-on role, you will work as part of a supportive team to maintain and enhance the presentation of our parks, gardens, and open spaces. This position is based in Queens Park, working on high-end horticultural assets and contributing to the presentation of one of Council’s premier open space environments . You will gain experience in a variety of horticultural maintenance activities while contributing to the delivery of high-quality, sustainable public spaces for the community. Key Responsibilities Assist in the maintenance and improvement of parks and gardens to a high standard Safely operate and maintain plant, machinery, tools, and equipment Undertake routine safety and maintenance checks and report any faults Accurately record operational activities using Council’s asset management system Follow safe work practices and contribute to a safe working environment Report on works, equipment status, and any issues relating to parks assets Respond appropriately to customer requests, enquiries, and feedback Work collaboratively within a team and under supervision to complete assigned tasks Work collaboratively across the broader Parks Operations team to support the delivery of maintenance and improvement programs across Council’s open space network Skills & Experience You will have a strong interest in horticulture or a related field, with either some prior experience or a genuine passion to learn and develop your skills. You bring an enthusiastic attitude, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. You possess a basic understanding of parks and gardens maintenance and are keen to build your knowledge of plant, equipment, and horticultural practices. You have sound communication skills, both written and verbal, and can follow instructions while developing your problem-solving abilities. This role requires a good level of physical fitness to undertake manual tasks such as lifting, bending, and operating tools and equipment. A current Victorian Driver Licence is preferred, or a willingness to obtain one.
