Are you an experienced trades professional ready to step into a leadership role? We’re looking for a motivated and hands-on Leading Hand to join our General Revenue team at our Cairns Kenny Street branch. In this role, you’ll play a key part in supervising workshop operations while remaining actively involved on the tools. You’ll lead by example, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standard. This is a permanent position, with multiple rosters available. What you’ll be doing As a Leading Hand at Hastings Deering, you will: Lead the team – provide day-to-day leadership, guidance, and support to workshop technicians, promoting a positive and productive work environment. Plan and prioritise work – coordinate and manage workflow to ensure jobs are completed efficiently and operational deadlines are met. Champion safety and quality – maintain a strong focus on safety, quality, and compliance, ensuring all work meets company and regulatory standards. Stay hands-on – assist with diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance of heavy equipment while leading by example on the tools. Drive performance – support the Foreman in achieving productivity and performance targets across the workshop. Grow capability – mentor and develop apprentices and junior team members, supporting skill development and career progression. Maintain accurate records – ensure job reporting and documentation is completed accurately and on time. Who are we and why work with us? Leading Hand Allowance – paid in accordance with the Hastings Deering Enterprise Agreement, recognising the additional leadership, coordination and supervisory responsibilities of the role. What you’ll need: A successful teammate will have experience in: Trade qualified – hold a recognised trade qualification such as Diesel Fitter, Heavy Vehicle Mechanic or similar. Proven leadership experience – demonstrated experience in a similar Leading Hand or senior Technician role. Technical expertise – strong knowledge of heavy equipment, ideally with experience on Caterpillar machinery. Lead and communicate effectively – well-developed leadership and communication skills to guide and support the team.
