Position Overview Retro Bay is a Sydney-based, family-owned business specialising in sourcing, restoring, refurbishing and re-homing mid-century and retro furniture. The business focuses on preserving the integrity of original designs while delivering high-quality, sustainable furniture solutions. On behalf of Retro Bay, we are looking for an skilled and motivated Furniture Maker. This role requires a high level of craftsmanship in timber furniture restoration, including structural repairs, fabrication of replacement components, surface refinishing, and preservation of original design characteristics. Position Responsibilities and Tasks: Assess and evaluate vintage furniture pieces to determine restoration requirements, structural integrity, and appropriate techniques Restore and repair timber furniture, including tables, chairs, cabinets, and sideboards, ensuring preservation of original design features Dismantle, fabricate, repair, and reassemble furniture components using traditional joinery techniques Construct, assemble and repair timber furniture using hand and power tools Cut, shape and assemble timber components in accordance with restoration requirements Remove old finishes and apply new finishes, including sanding, staining, polishing, oiling, and lacquering Repair or replace damaged components such as veneers, joints, legs, and structural frames Match timber grains, colours, and finishes to maintain authenticity of mid-century pieces Operate woodworking machinery and hand tools safely and effectively Interpret design characteristics of mid-century furniture (e.g., Parker, Chiswell styles) to ensure accurate restoration Conduct quality control checks to ensure all restored pieces meet business standards Maintain workshop cleanliness, tools, and equipment in accordance with WHS requirements Assist with preparation of furniture for showroom display and sale Contribute to efficient workflow and timely completion of restoration projects Qualifications and Skills: Certificate III in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology or relevant trade qualification, or alternatively, three years of relevant work experience in furniture making Demonstrated experience in furniture restoration and timber repair Strong knowledge of timber types, traditional joinery methods, veneer work, and finishing techniques Ability to work on vintage and mid-century free-standing furniture pieces Understanding of mid-century furniture styles or willingness to develop this knowledge High attention to detail with a strong focus on craftsmanship and quality Proven experience of at least 1 year in furniture component fabrication and restoration Salary: This is a full-time position with competitive remuneration between $76,000 - $85,000 p.a plus superannuation for a 38-hour work week.
