About The Role As the Signalling Interface Manager – Projects, you play an integral role in the success of V/Line’s Assets and Maintenance (A&M) Group. The A&M Group is responsible for maintaining today’s assets and infrastructure while planning for future network renewals and growth. It brings together teams that oversee rolling stock and network infrastructure, provide network access for freight operators and third‑party works, facilitate project integration and delivery across the network, and ensure robust engineering assurance — all of which enable the safe and efficient operation of the rail network. The Signalling Interface Manager – Projects acts as the crucial link between the Signalling Maintenance teams and Major Periodic Maintenance (MPM) works, as well as State‑led projects. This role focuses on providing specialist technical input and coordination across multiple delivery teams, ensuring that project works are designed, commissioned, and delivered to meet the long‑term needs of signalling maintenance. You will support Section Supervisors to ensure that all works entering operational service do so safely and in accordance with signalling regulations, project requirements, and V/Line standards. This role includes occasional on‑site attendance outside standard business hours, including some weekend work, to support project activities and key meetings. Statewide travel may be required from time to time, offering valuable opportunities to engage directly with projects across the network and deepen your understanding of V/Line’s operating environment. Key accountabilities include: Review and endorse project scopes, design specifications, risk assessments, and safety‑in‑design artefacts; drive practical, standards-compliant solutions. Provide technical guidance to Section Supervisors and Project Managers across the full project lifecycle, including handover, commissioning, and defect rectification. Lead the interface between Signalling Maintenance, MPM works, and State-led projects, ensuring maintenance requirements and scope are agreed early. Contribute to dilapidation surveys and Works Readiness assessments; represent Signalling Maintenance at project, occupation and contractor meetings. Set clear expectations for testing and commissioning, review plans, witness critical tests, and sign off readiness to return assets to service. Conduct field audits during occupations; identify non‑conformances across Rail Safety, OH&S, and quality, and lead rectification. What success looks like: Consistent T&C review framework used across programs. Earlier maintenance input to designs reduces rework and post-commissioning defects. Handover packs and asset data meet V/Line standards, enabling reliable maintainability from day one. Strong, trusted relationships with Section Supervisors and delivery partners. About You As the Signalling Interface Manager – Projects, you will report to the Maintenance Engineering Manager and play a key role in ensuring that project works are designed, commissioned, and delivered to meet the long‑term needs of signalling maintenance. You bring strong technical judgement and are comfortable operating as a subject‑matter specialist, collaborating closely with Section Supervisors and project teams to support safe and compliant outcomes. Our ideal candidate will possess the following: Qualified Signal Maintenance Technician (or equivalent competency) with extensive experience in railway signalling design and/or maintenance, supported by formal training or industry accreditation (e.g., Diploma of Railway Signalling, or a tertiary Electrical Engineering qualification). Hands-on testing and commissioning exposure across multiple interlocking platforms and level crossing protection systems (e.g., Westrace, Microlok, SSI/Smartlock) Ability to interpret and challenge design artefacts and verify maintainability early in design. Strong communicator who can influence project managers, technical staff and contractors, and clearly convey complex technical information. Proven ability to identify risks, prevent non‑conformances, and drive practical solutions. Able to work autonomously and lead by example and uphold V/Line’s safety standards. Valid driver’s licence. Desirable Experience supporting or leading signalling maintenance teams within multi-disciplinary project environments. Strength in configuration and change control for signalling assets (as-builts, drawings, and asset data updates in EAM systems). Working knowledge of Australian rail standards and safety-in-design duties, with a practical, operator-focused lens. Level crossing integration experience, including interface with traffic signals and road authority approvals. Ability to coach and mentor SMTs/engineers to drive consistent capability uplift and strengthen collaboration across the maintenance–project interface.
