About Us: Steel Mission Pty Ltd is a leader in the design and construction of light gauge steel structures. We are seeking an experienced Production Manager (Manufacturing) to join our team, working alongside our engineering and project teams to contribute to the successful delivery of our projects. Our company prides itself on delivering high-quality, durable light gauge steel structures, with a focus on precision, efficiency, and innovation. We foster a safe, collaborative, and growth-oriented work environment where every team member plays a vital role in our continued success. Key Responsibilities : Oversee daily, weekly, and monthly manufacturing operations to meet production targets, quality standards, and delivery deadlines. Direct and supervise daily production activities, including monitoring schedules, labour, equipment, and material flow to ensure operational stability and timely delivery. Optimise production workflows, resource planning (labour, machinery, materials), and preventive maintenance for key equipment (CNC machines, roll-forming lines) to reduce downtime, costs, and maintain continuous production. Manage inventory of raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished components in coordination with procurement and supply chain teams to support uninterrupted production and minimise holding costs. Establish and maintain quality assurance systems for LGS manufacturing, including in-process inspections, final audits, non-conformity resolution, and continuous improvement with the QA team. Collect and analyse production KPIs (output efficiency, equipment downtime, unit costs, labour performance), identify bottlenecks and improvement opportunities, and implement improvements such as Lean Manufacturing, 5S, and root-cause analysis. Prepare and monitor production budgets, control operational expenses, and deliver cost-saving initiatives without compromising quality, safety, or productivity. Lead and develop a highly engaged and high-performing production team (supervisors, operators, technical staff) through recruitment, training, performance management, coaching, mentoring, conflict resolution, and team building. Ensure compliance with OH&S, environmental, industrial relations, and legislative requirements; promote a zero-accident safety culture via safety audits, hazard identification, and safety training. Collaborate with engineering, design, procurement, sales, and project teams to align production plans with project specs, new products, and customer demand. Prepare and present operational performance reports, including KPI dashboards, production summaries, budget updates, and improvement recommendations to senior management. Diagnose and resolve production disruptions (equipment, process, staffing) promptly to maintain continuity. Monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in light gauge steel manufacturing, and recommend and implement process and technology innovations to enhance competitiveness and operational performance. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Management, Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, or a related field (preferred); equivalent work experience (5 years in manufacturing leadership) may be substituted. 5 years of progressive experience in a manufacturing production management role, with a proven track record of leading teams, optimizing processes, and meeting production goals—experience in steel manufacturing (preferably light gauge steel) is highly preferred. Strong knowledge of light gauge steel manufacturing processes, equipment (e.g., roll forming machines, cutting tools), and best practices (e.g., Lean, 5S, Six Sigma) in a metal fabrication or steel structure environment. Demonstrated experience managing production budgets, analyzing KPI data, and driving cost reductions while maintaining quality and safety standards in a manufacturing setting. Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills—ability to motivate, coach, and develop a diverse team, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams (engineering, design, project management) and senior management. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills—ability to identify issues, evaluate options, and implement effective solutions in a fast-paced manufacturing environment focused on project delivery. Thorough understanding of OSHA regulations and safety management in steel manufacturing; experience implementing and maintaining safety programs. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and manufacturing software (e.g., ERP systems, production scheduling tools, inventory management software). Ability to work flexible hours as needed (occasional overtime, weekends) to address production emergencies or meet critical project deadlines. Detail-oriented, organized, and results-driven with a focus on continuous improvement and aligning production with project success. Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in Operations Management or related field but not essential. Certifications in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or Production and Inventory Management (CPIM). Direct experience in light gauge steel structure manufacturing or metal fabrication. Familiarity with automated manufacturing systems and Industry 4.0 technologies relevant to steel production. Experience collaborating with engineering and project teams to deliver custom manufacturing projects.
