With a strong background in community services, family support, or related fields, you bring both empathy and practical skills to your work. You understand the unique challenges faced by grandparents raising grandchildren, including trauma, financial hardship, and complex family dynamics. In this predominantly phone-based role, you are often the first point of contact for grandcarers seeking access to the Grandcarers Support Scheme (GSS) and wraparound supports. You conduct eligibility assessments with sensitivity, using a trauma-informed and culturally safe approach that puts families at ease and helps them feel heard and supported. You are confident in conducting needs assessments, providing referrals, advocacy and practical support, and maintaining accurate records through client management systems. Your excellent interpersonal and communication skills help you build rapport with diverse individuals and communities, and your high level of organisation and initiative means you manage competing priorities with ease. You are warm, non-judgemental, flexible and adaptive and able to respond effectively to changing workplace requirements while delivering respectful, inclusive support. About the role As a Family Support Worker within the Grandcare Program, you will play a vital role in providing emotional, practical, and financial support to grandparents who are the primary carers of their grandchildren. This role helps ensure eligible grandcarers are connected with the Grandcarers Support Scheme (GSS) and receive access to a range of wrap-around services and community supports. The role is predominantly phone-based and often the first point of contact for grandcarers who may be new to the role, experiencing distress or with complex needs. Key Responsibilities: Conduct GSS eligibility assessments and support the processing of applications with accuracy, sensitivity and clear communication. Apply an understanding of issues impacting grandcarer families — including trauma, grief, loss, intergenerational parenting and financial stress — in all client interactions Assess client needs, build trusting relationships, and guide grandcarers through the GSS process and broader support options. Utilise knowledge of local and regional services (e.g., housing, legal aid, Centrelink, NDIS, education) to make appropriate and timely referrals. Facilitate group-based programs, including peer support groups and educational or wellbeing workshops tailored to grandcarer needs. Plan, promote and actively participate in community-based events, information sessions and social connection initiatives. Collaborate with colleagues and share insights to support team-based responses to emerging or complex family needs. Demonstrate strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, working effectively with individuals and families from diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
