Salary range as of 12 March 2026: $99,734 - $111,701 plus 15.4% superannuation Position Overview The National Operations Team sits within the Principal Registry and National Operations branch of the Court and is responsible for the cohesive management of judicial and registrar workload. The National Operations Team includes three main branches: Original Jurisdiction Allocations, Appellate Allocations and Business Reporting. Original Jurisdiction Allocations is responsible for the timely allocation of matters to judges and registrars, in accordance with protocols and procedures that have been approved by the Chief Justice. Appellate Allocations is responsible for the allocation of work that falls within the Court's appellate jurisdiction, and for the listing of matters in the Court's designated Full Court and appellate periods. The Business Reporting Team is responsible for workload analysis and reporting across legal operations, using the NCF Reporting Framework which comprises the Court's case management system, various reporting tools and systems, including the Business Information Reports and the NOR Information System. The Senior Legal Case Manager will be a member of the National Operations Team, reporting to the National Judicial Registrar - Original Jurisdiction. The key focus of the position will be supporting the allocation, reallocation and workload analysis of Federal Court judicial work nationally. However, the Senior Legal Case Manager is expected to be able to support all the functions of the team flexibly in order to account for workload demands. The role would suit a lawyer who can demonstrate knowledge of the Federal Court's jurisdiction, practices and procedures and familiarity with all the Court's nine NPAs, or the ability to acquire such knowledge and familiarity quickly. The key duties of the position include Major Activities The core areas of activity for the Senior Legal Case Manager are outlined below: 1. Support Allocation and Management of Judicial Work Original Jurisdiction Judicial Work: Provide oversight, training and support to registry staff, as required, to ensure that all new judge-related original jurisdiction filings are processed appropriately by registries. Prepare summaries and allocation emails for new judge-related original jurisdiction matters. Review new judge-related original jurisdiction matters and promptly assess the nature, urgency and complexity of each matter in accordance with the NCF Allocation Protocols, including identifying matters that can be dealt with by a registrar. Liaise with chambers in relation matters proposed for allocation and reallocation, including identifying potentially related matters and consulting with chambers about the impact on allocation protocols. Monitor and capture all matters requiring allocation and proposed for reallocation. Full Court and Appellate Work Undertake the preparation of case summaries for Full Court and appellate matters for consideration by the Chief Justice and National Appeals Coordinating Judges, under the direction of the National Judicial Registrar - Full Court and Appellate. Undertake case management support, including preparing initial triage materials and providing recommendations as to the appropriate case management of Full Court and appellate matters. 2. Workload Analysis and Monitoring: Undertake in-depth analysis and reporting of federal law work across original jurisdiction and appellate matters. This reporting will include analysing trends in filings (eg. nature, complexity, filing party, location, allocation and resolution of matters across NPAs and areas of practice). Monitoring original jurisdiction and Full Court and appellate matters to ensure the Court record is accurate and taking appropriate action, as required. Updating matter details in the Court's case management and reporting systems. Keep accurate records of particular categories of proceedings including class actions, regulator matters, schemes of arrangement and provisionally docketed matters. 3. Other: Ensure that judges, their related staff and registries, as well as litigants and other external stakeholders, have a clear understanding as to the operation of the NCF, including ensuring that the website, intranet, training materials and other NCF resources are up to date, and conducting regular training sessions. Support the development of policy and practice in the Court, including the drafting of practice documents and website material and preparing policy papers and reports, including for judges' meetings and judicial committee meetings. In addition, preparing presentations and papers for meetings, seminars and workshops. When workload requires, provide support and assistance to Registrars, including the preparation of matters for mediation and/or case management by a Registrar. Key Relationships NOR team members: consult and liaise with, and provide day to day support to, National Judicial Registrars, National Registrars and other team members in relation to the allocation and management of original jurisdiction and appellate judicial work, and workload analysis and reporting. Judges/Registrars: consult and liaise with, and provide high level advice to, chambers in relation to the allocation, re-allocation and management of original jurisdiction and appellate judicial workload. Chambers/Registry staff: provide guidance on the operation of the NCF and the practices and procedures for the national allocation of judge matters, across original jurisdiction and appellate work. Legal profession and litigants: liaise with the legal profession and litigants, as required.
