Our client operates a growing portfolio of battery energy storage systems (BESS) across Australia supporting renewable energy integration and grid stability. They are seeking an experienced BESS Engineer to support the design, commissioning, operation, and optimisation of their battery storage assets. This is a technical engineering role responsible for BESS system design, performance analysis, commissioning support, and ongoing asset optimisation. You will work across the full project lifecycle from design and procurement through to commissioning and operational performance, ensuring BESS assets deliver maximum performance and reliability. As BESS Engineer, you will provide technical expertise on battery systems, power conversion systems, control systems, and grid integration whilst supporting commercial and operational teams to maximise asset value. Key Responsibilities BESS Design & Engineering Prepare technical designs and specifications for BESS projects including battery systems, inverters, transformers, and balance of plant Conduct system sizing and configuration studies for energy storage applications Design electrical systems including single line diagrams, protection schemes, and control systems Develop technical specifications for battery modules, power conversion systems, HVAC, and fire suppression Prepare equipment schedules, design calculations, and technical documentation Review vendor proposals and conduct technical evaluations of equipment offerings Commissioning & Testing Support BESS commissioning activities including pre-commissioning checks, system integration testing, and performance verification Develop commissioning plans, test procedures, and acceptance criteria Conduct factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT) Verify system performance including charge/discharge capacity, round-trip efficiency, and response times Commission battery management systems, energy management systems, and SCADA integration Resolve commissioning issues and coordinate with contractors, vendors, and commissioning teams Performance Monitoring & Optimisation Monitor BESS performance including capacity, efficiency, degradation, and availability Analyse operational data to identify performance issues and optimisation opportunities Conduct root cause analysis of system faults, performance anomalies, and degradation trends Optimise battery dispatch strategies, charge/discharge profiles, and operational parameters Implement performance improvements and efficiency enhancements Develop performance reports and dashboards for asset management and operations teams Operations & Maintenance Support Provide technical support for BESS operations including dispatch coordination and fault resolution Develop operational procedures, maintenance schedules, and safety protocols Support maintenance planning including preventive maintenance and major inspections Coordinate with battery manufacturers and system integrators on warranty claims and technical issues Monitor battery health, state of health (SOH), and remaining useful life (RUL) Implement condition monitoring and predictive maintenance strategies Grid Integration & Compliance Ensure BESS compliance with grid connection requirements and network standards Support grid connection studies including fault level analysis and protection coordination Design grid interface systems including point of connection, metering, and communications Coordinate with network operators on connection agreements and technical requirements Ensure compliance with electrical safety regulations and AS/NZS standards Support regulatory testing and compliance verification Technical Analysis & Reporting Conduct feasibility studies and technical analysis for new BESS projects Develop technical reports, design documentation, and performance assessments Prepare capital cost estimates and technical input for project business cases Analyse battery technology trends, vendor capabilities, and equipment performance Provide technical input to commercial teams on BESS revenue optimisation Support investment decisions with technical due diligence and risk assessment Stakeholder & Vendor Management Liaise with equipment vendors, system integrators, and EPC contractors Coordinate with network operators on technical requirements and grid connection Support project teams including development, construction, and commissioning Engage with battery manufacturers on performance issues, warranties, and technical support Collaborate with operations, trading, and commercial teams on asset optimisation Provide technical training and knowledge transfer to operational teams Safety & Risk Management Ensure BESS designs incorporate appropriate safety systems including fire suppression and thermal management Conduct safety reviews, HAZOP studies, and risk assessments Implement safety protocols for commissioning, operations, and maintenance activities Monitor battery safety parameters including temperature, voltage, and cell balance Develop emergency response procedures and incident management protocols Stay current with battery safety standards, regulations, and industry best practices Essential Requirements Education & Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or related discipline Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or working towards registration valued Experience: 5-8 years of experience in electrical engineering, power systems, or energy storage Proven experience with battery energy storage systems including design, commissioning, or operations Strong understanding of battery technologies including lithium-ion chemistries, battery management systems, and thermal management Experience with power electronics, inverters, and power conversion systems Familiarity with BESS control systems, energy management systems, and SCADA Knowledge of grid connection requirements and electrical standards Technical Expertise: Strong understanding of battery energy storage system components and integration Knowledge of battery performance characteristics including capacity, efficiency, degradation, and cycle life Understanding of power conversion systems, grid-forming inverters, and grid integration Familiarity with BESS applications including energy arbitrage, FCAS, and grid services Knowledge of electrical design including protection, earthing, and safety systems Experience with AutoCAD, electrical design software, or simulation tools Analytical & Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills with ability to analyse performance data and identify issues Problem-solving capability for troubleshooting system faults and performance problems Attention to detail with focus on accuracy and quality Ability to interpret technical specifications, datasheets, and test results Data analysis skills using Excel, Python, or similar tools Communication & Collaboration: Excellent communication skills with ability to explain technical concepts clearly Collaborative approach to working with operations, commercial, and project teams Ability to coordinate with vendors, contractors, and network operators Technical writing skills for reports, specifications, and documentation Project management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities Highly Regarded Experience commissioning or operating utility-scale BESS projects Knowledge of Australian grid connection standards and NEM operations Understanding of BESS trading, revenue optimisation, and market participation Experience with battery management systems, energy management systems, or SCADA platforms Familiarity with battery safety standards including NFPA 855, UL 9540, or equivalent Understanding of renewable energy integration and hybrid projects (solar storage, wind storage) Postgraduate qualification in power systems, renewable energy, or energy storage Experience with power system analysis software or battery modelling tools What's
