About the Role The Head of Assurance is responsible for leading the Line 1 Risk function of the Medical Indemnity insurance business, providing independent oversight, challenge, and support to embed effective risk management practices. This role drives risk maturity uplift through proactive risk identification, assessment, and reporting, while fostering a strong risk culture aligned to the company's risk appetite and strategic objectives.As a member of the Business Change & Operations leadership team and broader Medical Indemnity senior leadership team, the Head of Assurance is a highly visible role, engaging with stakeholders across the business to raise risk awareness and ensure compliance with policies and regulations. This is a 12-month max term contract. Key Responsibilities are: 1. Risk Oversight & Advisory• Provide independent Line 1 risk oversight across all insurance operations (people, process and technology) and partner with business leaders to identify, assess, and monitor operational, compliance, and strategic risks• Ensure the controls assurance program is executed effectively and control gaps are reported timely to leaders and provide advice on remedial actions• Support business decision-making through timely, practical risk advice that balances opportunity with appropriate risk management• Partner with other divisions in Avant (including Line 2 Risk) to understand and implement new legislation and risk frameworks• Proactively engage with Line 2 Risk to inform them of business changes, risk trends and emerging issues 2. Risk Reporting & Insights• Prepare risk reports for the MI Leadership Team, Executive and Board committees, providing clear insights into the risk profile, emerging issues and complaint trends• Conduct deep-dives into areas of elevated risk or concern and deliver actionable recommendations• Develop and maintain risk dashboards and metrics that provide meaningful oversight of key risk indicators and risk appetite adherence• Escalate significant risks, issues, and incidents promptly 3. Risk Culture & Capability Building• Drive risk culture initiatives that embed risk awareness and accountability across all levels of the organisation• Design and deliver risk training programs, workshops, and awareness activities to build risk capability• Act as a trusted advisor and coach to business leaders and staff on risk management practices• Champion the integration of risk thinking into decision-making and business-as-usual activities 4. Project Risk Support• Provide risk expertise and oversight to key projects and support project teams with risk identification workshops, risk register development, and ongoing risk monitoring• Challenge project assumptions and ensure appropriate risk treatment plans are in place before project approval and implementation 5. Centralised complaints management• Manage the centralised Customer Resolutions team and liaise with the Group Complaints Officer to ensure that complex and escalated complaints are handled appropriately • Provide the tools and training to ensure that frontline teams understand RG 271 obligations and manage complaints in both a compliant manner while meeting our member experience principles 6. Team Leadership• Lead, develop, and mentor a team of Risk & Compliance professionals and Complaints Managers• Allocate resources effectively to ensure appropriate coverage across all business areas• Foster a high-performance culture by setting clear objectives and providing regular feedback Key Skills required to perform the role • Tertiary qualification in Finance, Law or Business or other related discipline • Risk or compliance certification would be highly regarded• Minimum 7 years' experience in risk management roles (can be within Line 1, Line 2 or Internal Audit), ideally in an APRA-regulated organisation• At least 2 years in a leadership capacity – leading small teams and ability to influence constructively at executive levels• Strong understanding of risk and compliance frameworks, best practice assurance methodology, and core APRA and ASIC regulations (in particular: CPS 220, CPS 230, CPS 234, RG 78 and RG 271)• Proven track record of building risk capability and driving risk maturity uplift• Collaborative approach to building stakeholder relationships with ability to provide robust challenge when required• Strategic thinker with strong business acumen and commercial awareness• Highly organised and able to prioritise competing deliverables• Continuous improvement mindset At Avant, we are "By Doctors for Doctors" — an organisation built on the foundation of caring for everyone.
