As our highly valued API Test Lead based in Brisbane your role will be the guardian of API quality at the bank. Your leadership ensures APIs are tested thoroughly across functional, performance, and security dimensions before they reach customers, partners, or core banking systems. By embedding automated testing into pipelines and engineering environments that are stable, repeatable, and observable, you reduce delivery risk while increasing confidence and speed. You’ll make an impact by: API Test Strategy & Practice Governance •Define, own, and continuously evolve the enterprise API test strategy, aligned to modern delivery models and regulatory expectations. •Establish clear, risk-based test approaches for APIs, covering functional, integration, performance, and security testing. •Define how testing is planned, structured, executed, and reported across API delivery, balancing consistency with team autonomy. •Act as the governor of the API test practice, setting standards, guardrails, and quality expectations across the bank. •Ensure test strategies align with integration architecture patterns, core banking constraints, and enterprise risk frameworks. •Continuously assess and improve test maturity, tooling, and practices across teams. Test Planning & Delivery Assurance •Define test planning practices that align with iterative and continuous delivery ways of working. •Ensure testing scope and depth are proportionate to risk, complexity, and customer impact. •Provide oversight and guidance for API test plans, ensuring coverage across functional, performance, and security concerns. •Support teams to identify test dependencies, environment needs, and quality risks early in delivery. •Ensure test outcomes and quality signals are visible, meaningful, and actionable for delivery teams and leaders. •Enable informed quality trade-offs while maintaining customer trust and platform safety. Automation & Pipeline Engineering •Design and maintain automation-first testing frameworks for APIs. •Embed automated API testing into CI/CD pipelines to provide fast, reliable feedback. •Ensure test planning and quality gates are reflected in pipeline design and aligned to risk context. •Improve pipeline reliability, test execution speed, and signal quality. •Eliminate manual, brittle, or low-value testing wherever possible. Environment & Test Data Engineering •Define and manage API test environment strategies that support reliable, repeatable testing across the delivery lifecycle. •Drive automation of environment provisioning and configuration in partnership with platform teams. •Establish automated test data strategies that support realistic, compliant, and repeatable testing. •Ensure environment and data considerations are addressed early in test planning to avoid late delivery risk. Performance & Resilience Engineering •Lead API performance testing practices, including load, stress, and endurance testing. •Ensure APIs meet performance, scalability, and resilience expectations, particularly for core banking and customer-facing services. •Identify performance risks early and partner with engineering and architecture teams to address them. •Use performance insights to inform design decisions, capacity planning, and operational readiness. Security & DevSecOps •Embed security testing into API delivery pipelines in line with DevSecOps principles. •Ensure APIs are tested for authentication, authorisation, data protection, and common vulnerabilities. •Partner with Cyber Security teams to align testing practices with security standards, threat models, and controls. •Promote a shared responsibility model for security across engineering teams. Collaboration & Capability Uplift •Partner with delivery teams to shape test strategies and approaches early in the lifecycle. •Coach and mentor engineers and testers in modern API testing and quality engineering practices. •Provide clear communication of quality risks, trends, and outcomes to technical and non-technical stakeholders. •Foster a culture of learning, experimentation, and continuous improvement across the API engineering community. Do things differently with us To succeed in this role, you will have: We value deep capability and diverse pathways. You don’t need to meet every requirement below — if you bring strong technical judgement and a passion for quality engineering, we’d love to hear from you. •Significant experience in test engineering or quality engineering roles, with a strong focus on APIs (typically 7 years). •Proven experience defining test strategies and approaches for complex technology platforms. •Deep hands-on experience testing APIs across functional, performance, and security dimensions. •Strong experience embedding automated testing into CI/CD pipelines. •Background in API performance engineering and resilience testing. •Experience working with core banking platforms or highly regulated systems. •Practical experience with DevSecOps and security testing practices. •Strong understanding of modern integration architectures and distributed systems.
