Cyber Security Engineer (contract role) 3 months contract Western Sydney/hybrid Engagement Overview We are seeking a highly reliable, hands-on Cyber Security Engineer to provide short-term operational coverage and uplift following a recent vacancy. This is a delivery-focused contract role that supports day-to-day cybersecurity operations, with a strong emphasis on vulnerability management, endpoint/SOE security engineering, and SOC collaboration. This role suits an experienced contractor who can hit the ground running in a NSW Government environment, work independently, and partner effectively with ICT and SOC teams. Key Deliverables / Responsibilities Deliver end-to-end vulnerability management, including identification, risk-based prioritisation, remediation coordination, and verification. Lead and support the deployment and operational use of Tenable (Nessus), including scan configuration, asset coverage, credentialed scanning, and remediation reporting. Perform endpoint and SOE security engineering, including Microsoft Intune configuration, security baseline enforcement, device hardening, and Essential Eight uplift activities. Work closely with the Security Operations Centre (SOC) to support threat detection, investigation, triage, and response activities. Support security controls across the Microsoft 365 environment, including Microsoft Defender for Endpoint and related security tooling. Mandatory Skills & Experience Strong hands-on experience with Tenable Nessus and demonstrated experience in vulnerability management across enterprise environments. Hands-on experience with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint. Proven SOE / endpoint engineering experience, including Microsoft Intune. Experience working in or alongside a SOC / cyber operations function. Ability to operate effectively in a NSW Government or large enterprise. Candidate Profile This role requires a practical, delivery-oriented cyber engineer, not a governance or policy specialist. The successful contractor will be technically strong, self-directed, and comfortable working across vulnerability management, endpoint security, and SOC-aligned operations with minimal onboarding.
