Seeking a horticultural assistant with experience maintaining large heritage gardens and conservation. About the Role This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career horticultural professional with a solid foundation of skills to work hands-on in one of NSW’s most significant and distinctive garden settings. As a Horticultural Assistant , you will contribute directly to the care, maintenance and ongoing renewal of the historic gardens and grounds at Government House Sydney. Working as part of the Estate Team, you will undertake a broad range of horticultural tasks that support day-to-day presentation, conservation works and new garden preparation across the site. The role offers genuine variety and responsibility. You will be involved in activities such as plant and soil care, propagation, turf maintenance, pest and weed control and landscape presentation, contributing to the long-term health and resilience of a complex heritage landscape. Working closely with the Senior Horticultural Coordinator, you will help assess garden conditions, carry out planned maintenance and conservation works, and respond to the operational needs of a high-profile estate that is open to the public and regularly used for official and ceremonial events. This role is well suited to someone who already has practical horticultural experience and is looking to apply and further develop their skills in a unique, professionally managed heritage environment. We’re looking for Practical horticultural experience Demonstrated experience undertaking a range of horticultural duties, gained through employment, apprenticeships or structured training. Skills may include plant recognition, cultivation, propagation, turf maintenance and soft and hard landscaping practices. A Certificate II in Horticulture or demonstrated equivalent experience. Professional approach to safety and compliance A sound understanding of workplace health and safety requirements, including following WHS procedures, using PPE correctly and handling chemicals and equipment safely. Equipment and site operations Experience operating horticultural tools and small plant and machinery such as mowers, brush cutters and blowers (and chainsaws where appropriately qualified). The ability to carry out basic equipment care, monitor irrigation systems and maintain accurate maintenance and stock records. Teamwork and communication The ability to work effectively as part of a small, professional team, taking direction where required and contributing reliably to shared outcomes. Clear communication skills and a practical approach to working with supervisors, colleagues and contractors. Capability and commitment A strong work ethic and pride in maintaining high-quality garden environments, including those of heritage significance. Physical capacity to undertake horticultural duties, including lifting and carrying up to 15kg, kneeling, bending and moving across the site. We value diverse experiences.
